An excellent, sophisticated indie sci-fi film (by skl890)
Just watched this at the Santa Barbara film festival. Very thought-provoking and impressively deep. I've been to a couple of film festivals including Sundance, twice , and I can honestly say that this is the first sci-fi movie I've wanted to immediately watch again. This movie will make you think long and hard about the choices that we as a society make regarding science, specifically with respect to artificial intelligence and robots. The plot constantly held my attention and had me on the edge of my seat. The acting and directing choices were unusual, compelling, and riveting. I <more>
haven't seen one of the main actors David Rogers much before, but he was particularly good. Bottom line- I would not be surprised if this were to become a sleeper hit.
Artificial Intelligence movie for the thinking person (by jamesanderson389)
Im surprised this movie has only one review, so I thought Id better chip in. Its not often one sees a movie and is so moved by it, as to submit a review, but this one did it for me. Its quite a cerebral movie, with preference to dialogue over special effects. The film is well directed and the script well written, the character arcs are well formed and detailed. I wish more big budget movies would be made like this, but I suspect they wouldn't attract too many viewers sadly. Anyway if you're a thinking person and like sci fi / especially anything to do with AI, this is a real gem of a <more>
find. The story line is gripping from start to finish and the attention to detail is just superb. All the actors did a great job, and its refreshing to see people putting real effort into their craft. The creator of the AI entity in this movie is believable and authentic unlike that drunken character in Ex Machina - which was that particular movies real weakness. The twist at the end was shocking and not something I saw coming. A real treat and thoroughly enjoyable experience.
Don't be fooled, this movie is not skin deep (by justcuriouslabel)
This is one of the most thought provoking movies I have ever watched. After watching it, it leaves you with a feeling that something isn't right, so many questions, you may have to watch it a few time to really see it's beautiful genius. And no offense to anyone else who wrote a review, but did you really watch the movie? It's a very well thought out script, everything said and shown is there for a reason. This movie is crafted to perfection. I've never written a review before, but having read all these other reviews I feel most people are missing the true beauty of this <more>
movie. Watch it again and really think about it, it is not a popcorn spoon fed movie, it's designed to make you think, make you question. That is it's genius. SPOILER ALERT: Plot summery: The movie seems to be about a Turning test, much like Ex Machina, Joy is brought in to write a report for a high tech magazine. Where she is introduced to Adam, she makes a Rainman joke at him, personally I thought this was really rude. What is with Joy why is she so unprofessional, anyway having talked with Adam for a few minutes David laughs OMG you didn't spot he is an AI, you an expert in the field couldn't tell he is an AI and her week long report starts, shown all the gadgets they have been working on, skin, bone, eye, etc. How David has been locked away from the world working on this project since he was 19, given unlimited funding and loves that he has been given the opportunity to contribute something truly amazing to humankind. He loves his work. As the movie progresses we get the sense all is not right with Adam, he does some quirky things for a machine, and Joy goes from being impressed with the technology to a growing dislike of Adam, but does start to fall in love with David. He's sweet kind and caring and she respects his vast intelligence. This is where the relationships between the characters really comes into play. On the last day Joy and David become sexual, and this really effects Adam. So much so that it results in a fight with David running away with Joy. Adam then knocks them out and they gain consciousness in the lab, David on the table and Joy tied to a chair. This is where Adam reveals that he is a real human and it is David that is the AI. SPOILER ALERT: SPOILER ALERT: Watch the movie before reading this, but it will make you watch the movie again. Most people in the reviews comment that the twist was so easy to spot, but I strongly disagree, it is there but did anyone else really see it? It's not like 6th Sense of oh he is a ghost, now all that other stuff makes sense, wow cool twist. The twist in this movie seems to say oh Adam is not really the AI it was David. Most people think this is sloppy, there were loads of clues. But this is the beauty of this movie and also explains the extra end scene of Joy in her flat. Why is she so shocked she is pregnant? I'm not going to give away the twist, but will tell you after watching this movie carefully a few times, it is far more complex that it appears. I will however give you a clue. Rule 101 for any science is to not blindly believe anything you are told, look at the evidence. David laughs at Joy for not recognizing that Adam is an AI, they fooled her, and she spends a week writing her report. Only to be told no in fact they fooled her into believing Adam was an AI when in fact he is a human. You have to question what kind of expert in robotics can't tell if someone is machine or human for a whole week. Could anyone present a human as AI and they would pass the Turning test, it's like they have intelligence and emotion wouldn't be front page news for a tech magazine, yet she really believed Adam was an AI. This is what really got me questioning this movie. If you think that Adam revealing he is not an AI is the twist ending you would be very much mistaken. The twist is revealed in Castle's office, it's subtle, but it is there. Anyway I highly recommend this movie, it seems seriously underrated and should be viewed as a work of genius.
What if your robot doesn't know it's a robot? (by in1984)
Add this to an impressive and growing burst of high quality robot/AI science fiction that includes Ex Machina 2015 , Automata 2014 , Robocop 2014 , Machine 2014 , Transcendence 2014 , Chappie 2015 , and even one of the comic-book superhero films Avengers Age of Ultron 2015 . Uncanny is the sudden comprehension by many in the film and entertainment industry of the underlying elements of cyberpunk, artificial intelligence, and how close it is to the present. This particular film tends to focus more on the psychology and perception involved in making an AI indistinguishable form a human. <more>
It still gets into many of the complicated aspects of building a robot equal to a human.Rather than focusing on some future, imaginary point, extraordinary features, and super powers, it's setting is, like Ex Machina, very much the present. Nonetheless, cyberpunk issues of those with probable conflicts of interest in how to use it and how they're involved along with privacy and secrets are naturally and believably wound into the story. The small cast also seem to be honestly experiencing this as it happened, so they deserve lots of credit for the artistic captivation of what might otherwise be simply a another nerd fantasy pic.
So.. which is the robot again ..? (by grahamschat)
I rarely give a movie more than 8, but I think this one is actually very impressive. You really have to watch the movie twice to appreciate the full quality of the acting which I think is amazing. You also need to be aware there is a post-credit scene, which adds to the twists of the plot.I also think some of the posters did not see the film all the way through and missed the point. So, in conclusion, I would say this is a very interesting film Especially as it had a low budget.
Better than "Ex Machina" by several Petabyte's (by h-gaitherbrandenburg)
This was more amazing than "Ex Machina." The story line was intense and illustrates the perils of our human race rapidly evolving toward sentient cyber life. *SPOILERS--Do NOT read ahead if you have not yet watched the movie* Spoiler ALERT, Spoiler ALERT!!! Rainn Wilson's character was brilliant and vile. It was harrowing to watch the last few scenes of the movie and the almost psychopathic rendering of the antagonist was amazing. Plot twist was somewhat expected, but not to the extent it was carried out, and the lack of moral compass that it unveiled in those who would use <more>
technology, and people, and emotions, at all costs. Loved it.
Uncanny is one of those very rare movies that quickly and effectively engages the viewer. This is a slow burn sci fi, there is not an abundance of special effects or action. What you get instead is a mostly well written, very clever story with a message about deception and surveillance. Technology may be amazing but, in the wrong hands, it is not necessarily our friend. The acting is of a very high standard. Its hard to fault the cast in any way. That said, the story which is almost excellent lets the film down somewhat in the last five to ten minutes. Its conclusion is a little clumsy, <more>
whilst the rest of the film is carried with an airy, almost effortless, deftness. A more subtle conclusion, would still have carried the films message and I suspect, left a more indelible impression on the viewer. So is Uncanny worth your time? Yes it is. It may be a little flawed but this is still a very good film with a very relevant message. Eight out of ten from me.
The plot was intriguing in this small flick, and the acting was quite good. It took me about 30 min into the movie to start to suspect what going on, but I was not trying to figure out the movie. This was a cool little sci-fi flick. Nothing earth shattering but well done and entertaining. I am glad I watched it. I like the theme of Robots and humans. I love the show Real Humans 2012– "Äkta människor" from Sweden. In that show they called the Robots, Hubots- best name ever. Now it has been remade for the UK/US version, not nearly as good as the Swedish version . Still good. <more>
This piece of science fiction it is actually a very pleasant and at the same time disturbing surprise. It is a mixture of funny business and human naivety. What dazzled me the most is how the human nature is changed to the extent that we are no longer humans, no longer able to make a difference between what is human and what is machine. That made me think about how volatile is this limit in our cyber driven society. This is one of those science fictions waiting to materialize. No wonder Stephen Hawking said AI could end mankind. It is a threat, very real and tangible. What scares me it is the <more>
lack of responsibility and awareness on behalf of those promoting it, the so called visionaries, which is actually well displayed in this movie. It will keep your mind occupied, that is a guarantee.
