raw, compelling, honest and masterful, brilliantly acted, amazing direction. (by chickamazon) |
If you are looking for a schmalzy feelgood film, walk away.. This is a compelling journey into the deep psyche by a master director whose authenticity shines through the whole film. Kim Farrant obviously knows her material, and brings it to the screen without compromise. She wrings a staggering performance from Kidman, whose arc into deconstruction is so seamless that you barely realise how deep you have travelled with her until you're already there. Anybody who has ever lost, really lost, someone they loved; anybody who has truly experienced grief in all its messiness and lack of <more> |
It's about it and leaves you with it (by spetsk) |
Hahaha...this movie is my first ever IMDb review, as I just had to crack the movie and came here for the answers. Then it hit me! This movie is about about dissatisfaction, unfulfillment and in the end leaves you with the feeling! Great concept! 10 points! How many lines I have to write, if the review is just one sentence? What about simplicity? : |
Kidman shines with realness and rawness in outback Australia life (by curdey) |
Nicole Kidman is stunningly raw and moving in this haunting drama. People that have dismissed this film don't appear to truly understand it. A real reflection of outback Australia living. The cinematography matches the tone of the film to a tee, and Kidman gives the most raw performances of all time. The film is open-ended, leaving the outcome to the interpretation of the viewer, another feature of the film which is another reason why this film divides audiences. For me, it left a lasting impression on me - a film about loss of innocence and the simmering tension of slow living in the <more> |
Strangerland is a chilling look in the mirror. (by peoplepower-588-227356) |
Where are we now, where are we when our entertainment is headed by sexual sadism, the kind expressed through scenes of the most brutal torture and sexual humiliation that money can buy, as we see in *Game of Thrones* and *Penny Dreadful* and so very many lesser efforts? In *Strangerland* we get right down to facing this question squarely - at the intersection of our very worst fears. To take us there, *Strangerland* skips the mask of blood and gore that sells tickets to get to the heart of it, beyond any hope of salvation for the viewer. It doesn't preach, except for spitting the question <more> |
Disturbing but Compelling Venture (by collhi-102-41114) |
Let's just say right out of the gate that this movie will not be for everyone. What Kidman flick ever is? If you want something fast-paced and unambiguous, then don't even darken the door. But, for everyone else...if you have some have patience, this moody movie about harrowing circumstances will definitely get under your skin in a good way.First off, the acting is superb. Nicole Kidman effortlessly expresses a range from A to Z and back again in fleshing out a character that is complex and slightly deranged and raw. No one can play a distraught mother with more nuance than this <more> |
Powerfully Atmospheric Australian Classic (by andrewbunney) |
Children lost in the Australian outback is an enduring Australian nightmare and here, parental terror and wild accusations flood the situation. Feelings of failure and regret swirl round, dwarfed by the massive, gorgeous landscape. The local indigenous people are enmeshed in the whole sorry business too, and the natural elements are invoked, charging the stifling atmosphere.Kidman is absolutely compelling as a desperately unhappy mother. Weaving is in his best role so far. Fiennes is a dramatically jarring element and the action rolls along to a soaring, sometimes rocking soundscape. It's <more> |
This is so much better than people give it credit for (by almosalami) |
Don't listen to the people saying it doesn't make sense or it doesn't have an ending or whatever. Look, this film isn't really for everyone, because it's slow-paced and not a lot is happening all the time, but certain things are undeniably great about this film, like the acting and the cinematography and the soundtrack and the REALISM. This film really surprised me in it that it's not at all "hollywoodized". It's purely just real. It reveals human nature in a way that not a lot of films do, as in, people are more complicated that we give them credit for, <more> |
Honest, Compelling and Not what it Seems! But Worth the WATCH! (by twest-81651) |
Proving that sometimes you have to read into a movie rather then just view. "Strangerland" is lead by an amazingly powerful performance one of her best By Nicole Kidman, First off the director does not give you a lot to go on, which is OK, if you don't mind having to find the story yourself I did like the location for this film set in the outbacks of Australia, its not something we see often especially us Aussies However the directer i think struggles to get her exact point across, the film drags in certain places, but ultimately tells a sexual psychological thriller that <more> |
Our troubled young women and their sexuality (by heatherlyons-57031) |
I think this movie would be hard for anyone to appreciate who hasn't "been there." My take on the film is that it is about young females and their sexuality. When they discover it. How they use it. What it means to them. Reasons we may be seeing overly sexual and lost girls, and what this can lead to. It gives you some insight into the mind of a troubled teen struggling to find her identity through sexual encounters. They briefly intro the daughter "Lilly" and she is a wildly sexual creature. Perfect features. Always scandalously clad and very aggressive. She seemed to <more> |
