Salma Hayek's Everly Gives Us A Hot Star and a High Body Count (by DarylKMiddlebrook)
Boredom is the last thing you will have to worry about when watching Salma Hayek's new action gorefest Everly. In fact, if you have a heart condition, you might want to keep the nitro pills within arms reach because this film doesn't give you too many opportunities to get off the edge of your seat. The film opens up with the horrifying screams of a woman being sexually abused. Thankfully, we don't see anything until a traumatized Everly, Hayek turns in a marvelous performance stumbles nude, into the bathroom. Physically and psychologically battered, she retrieves a gun and cell <more>
phone from inside the toilet tank. Everly attempts to reach out to an undercover cop who promised to help her escape. However, it's not long before the deviants are bellowing at the bathroom door for round two of their debauchery. So traumatized, Everly initially thinks of using the gun to end her life, instead, she surprises the rapists/mobsters killing them all. Sitting in a room full of dead bodies, Everly is contacted by Taiko, the man who abducted her, and who kept her as his personal sex slave. It seems Everly stole a huge sum of money from him and attempted to escape, which led to his turning her over to his wretched men to use for their pleasure, and eventually kill. He quickly lets her know that she is all alone, as evident by the gift wrapped head of the cop who was supposed to help her escape. With death inescapable, Everly channels her fright and trauma into a single focus. She must stay alive long enough to get the money into the hands of her mother, who has been caring for her young daughter the ridiculously adorable Aisha Ayamah since her abduction. The Petite Salma Hayek stands tall beside the male action heroes of the past, Schwarzenegger, Willis, and Stallone, as she manages to accumulate a pretty impressive body count. Besides the five rapists, she sends at least another twenty mobsters, hooker assassins and sadistic sickos to meet their maker before the inevitable confrontation with Taiko played with creepy effectiveness by Hiroyuki Watanabe . Hayek has all of the charisma to pull off such a film without it seeming campy or stretching the realm of believability too far. Her natural sex appeal is an added treat for male fans, something that I found lacking in other female oriented action films such as Kill Bill and Resident Evil. The film's cinematography courtesy of DP Steve Gainer is as breathtaking as Ms. Hayek. Director Joe Lynch, in his first turn with a major budget and star, offers up a film at neck break speed, pausing only long enough for Hayek's personality to shine through. Lynch also benefits from the expert hand of veteran editor Evan Schiff Pan's Labyrinth, A.I. Artificial Intelligence who effectively maintains the story below the non-stop action.
It's a pretty good movie in the extreme action violence exploitation film genre, where it's bloody to the point where it's more ridiculous than actually realistic. Blood and gore galore. This is for fans of movies like Hobo With a Shotgun or Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky. It's a very simple but entertaining premise, where Salma Hayek is stuck in an apartment, while she fights off waves of bad guys coming in trying to kill her. The entertainment comes from the variety in the assassins being sent in to kill her, from gun-toting hookers, to katana-wielding Yakuza guys, to evil SWAT <more>
guys, to some bizarre sado-masochists. Ridiculous stuff. If I had to complain about anything, I'd say I would have liked to see maybe fewer shootout scenes and more martial arts instead, which would have been perfect for a movie like this. Swords and knives do come into play, but not enough for this to be considered a martial arts movie.
What more can you want from an all out action film with a twist when is Everly 2 coming ? Please
Everly is a tight action thriller with a fast pace, heart pounding suspenseful moments, shocking scenes, and the odd funny one liner (by sweeeetmikey)
EVERLY review by Mike Smith A woman who faces assassins sent by her ex, a mob boss, while held up in her apartment. From the first time I saw the trailer I wanted to see this movie and it was not a let down. Everly is a fresh idea and this film is like Kill Bill turned up to 11, although some of the subject matter sex trafficking is hard to swallow at times. There's not much music in the movie, mostly just dark tones. Some of the most twisted stuff in the movie is made up of sounds, fascial reactions and your brain fills in the blanks. The story is well written and is like nothing you <more>
have seen before. Joe Lynch did an amazing job directing this masterpiece; the action scenes are over the top and the intense scenes are heart pounding and will keep you on edge. Now let's talk about the star, Salma Hayek is spectacular! I think only few woman could hold a movie like Everly on their own. She keeps you rooting for her character from start to finish and the strength she gives Everly to go on is amazing. Every time something bad happens to her you feel crushed.Everly is a tight action thriller with a fast pace, heart pounding suspenseful moments, shocking scenes, and the odd funny one liner. This film isn't for everyone but it sticks with you for days after you see it. Everly is an awesome character that goes from an enslaved woman to a hero. I'd like to see Joe Lynch and Salma Hayek get awarded for this film. Cheers and remember like won't suck as long as there is a good movie to watch. Also keep your eyes open for a cameo from Joe Lynch him self 9.5 out of 10 Edited by: Samantha Locke twitter: FatMikeTPK Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/FatMikesMovieReviews
Everly' is one hell of a fun film and might be the best Holiday movie ever made. (by bryank-04844)
I went into 'Everly' not knowing anything other than the great horror filmmaker Joe Lynch directed it and that the beautiful Salma Hayek was starring in this action film. After the film ended, not only was it one of the most entertaining and thrilling experiences I've had in the theater in a long time, but it was also one of the greatest Christmas movies I've ever seen.Joe Lynch 'Holliston', 'Chillerama', 'Knights of Badassdom' and 'Wrong Turn 2' has conjured up one hell of a film that pays homage to the great sadistic Japanese films of <more>
Takashi Miike and some of the best 80s action movies ever made. You can say that 'Everly' plays out like 'Kill Bill' on speed and set all in one room. Lynch used his camera so well and told not only a balls-to-the-wall action story, but also a heart felt tale of one woman who will do anything for her family, that at the end, you feel like you went through hell and back with her. It was FANTASTIC!The opening shot introduces us to a naked Salma Hayek Everly , who runs to her bathroom soaked in sweat and god knows what else and pulls a gun from her toilet tank and then opens the door and shoots several men. We come to learn that she was forced several years ago into prostitution for a Yakuza mob boss, and has not been able to contact her family since then. Well it seems she has had enough and wants to get out of this luxury apartment, which is more like a prison where the mob boss and his lackeys and clients can go to have their sadistic ways with Everly. Once Everly lets him know that she is done for good, he puts out the word and bounty to other assassins and prostitutes to take her life in lieu of cash.Well this sets off the film as Everly must fight off each attacker including whores with knives and weapons, tactical military assassins, ninjas, and even a diabolical sadist and his masochist, which will bring high end thrills. All the while, she is trying to protect her mother and small child whom she has never met in fear that her mob boss will get to them first and kill them. It's a non-stop high octant thrill ride that you'll want to ride again and again. Hayek is brilliant in this role. I wouldn't say she is as badass as Uma Thurman in 'Kill Bill', not because she can't fight, but because she isn't a skilled assassin. She is just a regular woman who will do anything she can to keep her family safe.Lynch treats Hayek as she was Bruce Campbell in an 'Evil Dead' movie as she is put through the ringer completely. It looks like it was a very physical and bloody shoot for her, and she pulled it of perfectly. And if Lynch couldn't get any cooler, he enlisted the amazing talent of Bear McCreary to score the film, which is epic beyond a level that you can't begin to imagine. In addition to the score, the film is solely comprised of Christmas music as it is indeed set during the holiday season, which is brilliant. To see Hayek take out numerous villainous bad guys to the tune of 'Silent Night'. 'Everly' is one hell of a fun film and might be the best Holiday movie ever made.
Smokin' Aces + Kill Bill + Dredd Everly (by JasonKleeberg)
Smokin' Aces + Kill Bill + Dredd EverlyI found out about Everly late last year because of Fantastic Fest, and I've been pretty excited about it. It's about a woman faces down assassins sent by her ex, a mob boss, while holed up in her apartment - which sounded pretty similar to two movies I loved in 2012 Dredd and The Raid: Redemption , and the pictures I saw during post made it look like a lot of fun.Selma Hayek plays the titular Everly, a Mexican prostitute. At 48, she looks great, and I haven't seen her kick ass like this since Desperado. She's the sole focus here, <more>
but some of the side characters are pretty interesting. My favorite was a character named Sadist, an old Japanese speaking psycho with some tricks in his bag. It's directed by Joe Lynch, a pretty small time filmmaker best known for directing Wrong Turn 2.Everly isn't going to win any awards for it's story. It's as one dimensional at best, and still manages to make little sense at times. It often falls into action movie tropes like bad guys hesitating to talk before pulling the trigger of course leading to their demise , something that disappointed me seeing that Lynch was brought up on a steady diet of B-movies. Everly does bring one thing to the table though, and that is a hell of a lot of fun. There's no skimping on the blood here, people are shot, sliced, and blown up in all it's gory glory. There's a particular shot using an elevator that is amazingly awesome. It really tapped into what I love about action movies at points. The scope of the movie is as small as the budget, and although the story is pretty "been-there-done-that", if you're looking for some fun action that's not taking itself seriously, you really can't go wrong with Everly. My final score: B+
As An Action-Thriller Film. This Film Should Become A Cult Film. (by Vivekmaru45)
I enjoyed this film immensely. Those persons who are blasting away at this gem don't know a thing about films. For a film to be entertaining it should be 1 solid action scenes 2 have superb background sound-effects 3 interesting characters. This film fulfills all the above. The tempo is also terrific - I didn't even notice the time pass.Salma Hayek plays a sex slave Everly, who rebels against her owner. The intentions of the owner are revealed gradually during the film. This film is directed by Joe Lynch who directed a notable horror entry Wrong Turn 2: Dead End. This film could <more>
be Joe's most significant film to date along with Wrong Turn 2.This film portrays scenes of violence which would be unsuitable for family viewing and for persons under the age of 18.Similar films: Oldboy 2003 , I Saw The Devil 2010 , The Man From Nowhere 2010 , Liam Neeson's Taken Trilogy, Die-hard Trilogy, Rambo Trilogy, Commando, Predator 1-2, Silence Of The Lambs, Red Dragon, Hannibal, Manhunter, Seven, Kiss The Girls, Along Came A Spider.
Salma Hayek Returns With A Big Bang (by FilmMan47)
Serious and honest i will be you can never win a war with idiots and critics this is not just my personal theory its a fact an idiot will always try to question you no matter how much you explain and a critic will always hate no matter how much good something is now the case is same with this film Everly 2014.To the people who are saying john wick is better wait till you see this film i love Keanu Reeves but that film was bogus now here Salma Hayek returns to action genre making her comeback after a very long time Salma just rocks most people love to see her nude and having sex on screen but <more>
me i have always liked her acting methods near perfect timing she's got very dramatic actress Penelope Cruz and Salma both are my favorite specially Salma ever since i saw her in 90s flicks desperado is one famous film with Antonio Banderas. This is not the type of film for people who like marvel or DC comic book films ala avengers or batman this is coming from a hardcore comic fan like myself i enjoy those films but action does not mean use of heavy cgi wearing cheesy costumes preferring style over substance Asian Hong Kong cinema specially is big proof of it Hollywood tries to copy those old films but fail Tsui Hark,John Woo,Ringo Lam you name it all of these guys used their brain instead of computers.Hollywood is missing out a lot this director Joe Lynch deserves a chance he worked hard on this film and it can be seen yes there are some unrealistic moments but on the whole it was worth it what i enjoyed and loved about this project that it opens with action loud no back story of characters no lame dialogs just guns blazing a lot of blood as it progress the viewer gets hooked the first half an hour story won't make sense at all but on the second half its gripping even if its is flawed.Everly is no female assassin she is just in a troublesome situation and wants to get out how hard it is very simply to follow so why the hate this movie is getting a lot of bad reputation just because it is not a big budget one featuring lame hack talentless director along with a dumb model turned actress who can't act for life like Scarlett Johansson,Anne Hathaway etc.Great use of ammunition, explosives by the makers here excellent camera angle shots providing 1980's cinematic vibe to it bonus point is the location of the flat wow one room and corridor is just epic to look at reminded me of old-boy & the raid redemption 2011 what can i say more i am a sucker for action films at one point when the bad guy throws a bomb into a room where Everly jumps in and hides for few seconds she jumps back into her apartment again with a blast nearly killing her that was sick anyway the music was well placed not too heavy but atmosphere just takes the cake here. The Plot:Everly is a prostitute who is trapped in a building apartment there is no escape as a lot of bad guys including trained killers and females assassins are coming to kill Everly sent by Taiko because Everly is helping law enforcement agencies to crush his organization things soon become very personal when Taiko threatens to kill her mother and a daughter. The Cast:i wont mention everyone they did superb work but Salma Hayek is the star here those expressions body tattoos and deep acting just excellence surpassed i must say,Salma looks best when firing a Thompson tommy gun style rifle going Rambo mode made me grin so hard the kill-count is impressive as Everly blows some punks in elevator too but killing of the dog was unnecessary that was cold move by Everly i did not expect this at all.I am totally looking forward to the sequel if there is any chance these guys are making it,once again guys i am warning forget the haters, critics and any other person who tells you this film is not worth your money people go to comic con for getting insight of stupid flicks but forget these ones this is hypocrisy. Not only the film even the poster has bad ass written allover it this film is not for just action sake its got everything in balance.Overall Everly 2014 is a great film to look at despite the flaws keep in mind this is not the first and only violent film where a female kills everyone it might not become a new classic but it should be appreciated for what it is my rating is 8/10: Highly Recommended
