If you love Indie Horror this set of 4 short films is for you (by cospoz)
I am impressed of the low rating of these 4 short films that comprise XX. I believe that rating sometimes mostly depends on the viewer's expectations. XX what a bad title is a set of 4 short films. The films are indie in style and narrative so this is important to note before you watch them. If you love the prequel to the Texa's chainsaw massacre XX is NOT for you. If you are always looking for something different in horror movies, a different way of telling a story or a different story all together XX IS for you.I found "The Box," the first one of the short films to be <more>
most disturbing although "My Only Son" is an interesting reworking of a classic horror theme.
All of the stories leave you hanging but they are great. I couldn't stop watching.
It's not for everyone, or even most people... (by bennettracheal)
I created an account just to review this movie.First I have to say this movie is polarizing, people seem to either appreciate the focus on a female perspective or reject it, probably due to its unconventional presentation, but I think that is refreshing considering how tv and movies spoon feed us nowadays. We are told what to think and how to feel, who the bad guy is, who the good guy is but in XX things aren't as cut and dry. The focus on anxiety, depression, status, religion, family, children, is all from the female perspective, with a supernatural twist of course. And I think the <more>
female directors/actresses did an amazing job. I fully recommend this movie to anyone who is looked my for something different.
I enjoyed the stories. I felt this was a good example of talented directors getting the best out of their relatively unknown actors...all of whom did a wonderful job, actually. I highly recommend this for a fun scary nightwatch. Don't expect much. Just enjoy the work of these wonderfully talented directors. The stories are fast paced, fun, and sometimes terrifying. This one is going into my collection.
Don't listen to negative reviews. (by zildjian_x)
I personally found this movie very interesting and I really enjoyed it. I think what turns many people off to it is that people often like movies that tell them exactly what's going on, movies they can figure out. XX leaves you wanting more, but that's exactly how it should be. It lets you come up with your own interpretations of each story. It makes you use your imagination. You are left wondering just what exactly is it trying to portray? There are many unanswered questions but that's what makes it work. If you were given all the answers it would only be a let down after the <more>
stories being so built up. It's not a typical horror movie. It isn't just about blood and guts and killing people. I would categorize it as more of a suspense. It had me on the edge of my seat waiting for what may be coming next. If you are the type of person that wants an answer to everything that happens in a movie, then this is not for you. If you don't mind open ended movies that leave you wondering and coming up with all kinds of theories on what each story might mean, then I think you will really enjoy this movie.
Thumbs UP! Trust the women directors to leave us scratching our heads! (by Showho)
Unlike many movie goers who clearly prefer to be spoon-fed their cinematic content, told what to think and how to feel, I have to applaud the makers of 'XX' for thinking outside the box and coming up with a truly original anthology film... It's no wonder this movie is igniting such a fevered, divisive reaction in viewers. I've only watched 'XX' once, thus far and let me tell you, certain chapters of this anthology definitely left me with questions, and you know what? That's okay! It's a supremely refreshing surprise to invest in some short narrative films <more>
that DON'T lay it all out in a neat, tidy, albeit bloody little box and call it good. This film ROCKS, and if you still have a brain and enjoy using it, 'XX' is one of the best horror anthologies to come around in a long time!
A welcome spark of imagination in a horror story (by smart_squirrel)
To those who are into something original - go for it. It's really fresh, stylish and also rewarding for those who are into black humour. If you compare 'XX' to the main Hollywood horror produce most of which is incredible rubbish these days - you'll get what I mean by saying all of the aspects of this film are so welcome.Non-standard format seperate non-overlapping stories , unexpected interpretation of human emotions as in 'The Birthday Party' , as well as emotional dysfunctions The Box , followed by a fallback to more classic horror 'Don't Fall' - <more>
all have something interesting to offer.Forget who the film is made by: essentially, it doesn't matter. Just enjoy something we, horror lovers, haven't seen for a while - a spark of imagination.
