OK. So it doesn't hail a new era in cinema making. But this film fits Statham like a boxing glove. Something that no other film to my mind has managed to pull off since Transporter. There's the right quantity and quality of dark humour, sharp dialogue and contrasting personalities - against a sordid yet appealing background - among the fight scenes and damn fine ones at that to make this a well rounded action movie. Those of us who have a penchant for this genre are more often than not disappointed with the result - poor acting, shallow pseudo-intellectualism, mindless bangs and <more>
booms,... - but, thankfully, this is not one of those times.
I'm really not sure what people are looking for in a Jason Statham film, but if you are a Statham fan, this should have it. If you go and judge Shakespeare by his fight sequences, or a Statham movie by it's high culture, you will be disappointed in each. This movie has crisp occasionally humorous dialogue, sexy women, intense, really well choreographed fight scenes, some decent characters, and a fairly lightweight plot. There are only a few fight sequences in this 90 minute movie, but they are so good. If you look down the line, almost every Statham movie has the same rating, <more>
strengths, and complaints. If you like Statham, watch this. If you want drama, check out some re-runs of Downton Abbey, though I understand the fight sequences are terrible.
Deserves way more. Why would you watch a Statham flick and whine about the genre? Thid is very well paced. The character is well developed. Its tense and funny. Deliveres a great villian ,,,very funny to watch. Too edition to the gambling flick. Mag Kava fighting choreography definitely not boring. Another hidden neflix gem. 10 DG's
What a ride! (by umetoo)
This movie was so good! The action was unbelievable. The story was great. The dialog was slick. The entire movie had style. Such great fun! Jason was in unbelievable shape... Did he really eat just spinach and brown rice?? That dude I swear... How does he stay in that shape without being a professional body builder.... It's so exhilarating to see a solid, simple story that just makes sense, without any unnecessary twists and turns and extra baggages that somehow always turn stupid in the end like in most other action movies nowadays. It's great to see action movie makers with common <more>
sense. It's getting harder and harder to find. And if only the actions in most action films could be as intense and satisfying and jaw-dropping as this one. What a refreshing movie all around! And it's set in Vegas, who doesn't like a movie set in Vegas? I don't know what else to say other than go see this movie!
I was in the mood for a nice action movie, and I did not have a lot of expectations for this Jason Statham movie. I have to say it was really entertaining, patient viewers will be rewarded! I was surprised to see the low rating here on IMDb, but I understand this is a "slow- burning" type of movie, not always the best idea for action movies. However, this had a lot of great elements in my opinion. It is not a full-throttle non-stop action type of flick, but the fight scenes are very well executed, especially one fight scene in the Casino. I prefer having a few great scenes filmed <more>
with style than numerous average fights/gunshots scenes filmed with shaky-cam. This is why I liked this movie better than previous Statham flicks like "Safe", or "The Mechanic" which I still liked .The music was cool, and I loved seeing Statham driving around with his Ford Torino GT in the streets of Vegas. The direction from Simon West was really surprising, coming-off very strong after the pretty generic and weak "Stolen" with Nic Cage. The movie is not perfect, the sub-plot with Cyrus the young guy was a bit annoying, but it is a cool movie, really underrated in my opinion. You also have a lot of great supporting actors like Stanley Tucci, Sofia Vergara and Max Casella. 8/10
In a time where fast, flashy movies are most common. With shallow character development, this one stands out as a jewel if you know how to appreciate it.Some might argue this movie develops slowly: For me it gives depth to the movie and creates understanding of the psychology. While the conclusion really leaves you with food for thought. The director seems to explore more of the story and reality in between while you're submerged into pure cinemographic craftmanship; The scenes are beautiful with attention to detail and are credible. The characters develop while you understand more of <more>
their psyche. It isn't portrayed as "a hero" or "anti hero": it's more nuanced. While it speaks to you personally. While the contrast is very harsh when usual spectable does occur it does excite as a whole. This is a movie to sit down with and relax - while feeling all too human.
What's up with the low rating!? It's quite good! pssst Corey Yuen is the action choreographer (by Finfrosk86)
Hm, some times it is hard to understand why movies get such bad reviews and low ratings. OK, it is not that action filled, and the plot may not be the most original what plot is anyway? , but I really enjoyed this movie.Jason Statham makes one of his best performances here, I have to say. He doesn't reinvent the wheel or anything, but I really liked him. Another reviewer compared this movie to "The Equalizer", and it does share some similarities. I liked this one better, tho. This is a Statham flick, so we are expecting some action, right? Well, the action scenes are few, and <more>
rather far apart, but when they come, they hit you like a ton of Statham-fists right in your face! Damn! And no wonder, the incredible Corey Yuen is the friggin' action choreographer! Corey Yuen, co-director of The Transporter, director of several Jet Li-movies, also fighting choreographer on among about a billion other movies my favorite fighting movie ever: Kiss of the Dragon. Great to see him back working with Statham, the fight-scenes are really just very, very cool.. Brutal, hard hitting. Just awesome. I had to re-watch the longest one like, three times immediately after the credits rolled.Go into this expecting an easily digestible thriller/drama with a couple, two, three great action/fight sequences and you are golden!
Most people I've asked have a love - hate relationship with this movie. "It is a good movie but it is not a JS level type of movie". So when I've decided to finally see it, my expectations were rather low. Yet, this proved to be an amazing movie, maybe one of his best. Yes, it doesn't have the humor of Crank and he fights far less in this one, compared to his others. But it is a comedy with dark undertones and a moral in the story. It is different. I can't say that it will leave you thinking for days or hours or even minutes but it is not mindless action <more>
as some of his previous movies were.So yes, it is a fast paced action movie that is worth watching.
This is not a run of the mill Statham movie. Yes, it does have his not inconsiderable fight skills, and as usual they are well choreographed and with plenty of bone crunching ferocity. Yet it is a tense thriller it has moments that are very taught and well acted. I was confused at some aspects of this film. We had some great acting talent making cameo roles, such as Stanley Tucci, Jason Alexander, Hope Davis and Max Casella. Why we didn't see more of these people is beyond me. They would certainly of added something extra to the film. Maybe the directors cut will fulfill my wish The story <more>
is a remake of the Burt Reynolds film "Heat" and as a new twist on that film it does itself proud. It's never going to be film of the year. It has a target audience who will go away satisfied. If you are a fan of Statham and you want to watch a film that will deliver his gruff one liners, a shiny bald bonce and a decent well interpreted story..then this is probably going to be good for you.
