The mind-saving alternative to "40-Year Old Virgin." (by Carycomic)
You read that right. After masochistically sitting through the first hour and fifteen minutes of the above, I went to see this movie, instead. And, it was well worth the extra $6.25! Not only is it a clear-cut, fast-paced, grammatically clean comedy. It is also a computer-animated gem. Disney and Pixar are coming to the end of their CGI partnership. But, with this apparently British outfit--Vanguard--as their new partner, I don't see Disney as worrying about being in the red, anytime soon. The plot is simple. It's May of 1944. And, homing pigeons, working for the British army, are <more>
trying to get vital information to Allied Headquarters in London. Unfortunately, General Von Talon--the eye-patch wearing leader of the German falcons masterfully voiced by Tim Curry --has captured the last of Wing Commander Gutsy's veteran messengers hilariously voiced by John Cleese . So, the raw recruits of Squad F will have to be used, a lot sooner than expected...or preferred! Said recruits consisting of: the title character heroically voiced by Ewan McGregor/"Revenge of the Sith" ; Bugsy, a shower-phobic con artist; Lofty Wortington, a monocle-wearing aristocrat; and Toughwood and Tailfeather, a pair of feisty soccer-champion brothers. They successfully make it to occupied France; establish contact with Charles DeGirl love that name! , female leader of the French Rodent Resistance; and, then, just barely it make back to England with the crucial message. All in all, a light-hearted history piece that--as far as I'm concerned--successfully recaptures the flavor of similar Disney flicks of the past. And, what with this month being the sixtieth anniversary of WWII's Allied victory, this movie would be especially enjoyable for those parents who have budding history professors among their little ones.
If you are reading my review, it means you are just checking out to see if it is a good movie, or have doubts about seeing it. Considering all the 3D Animation stuff released to this day on giant titles like Shrek from DreamWorks and Nemo from Pixar, among others I can guarantee the reader that Valliant is for sure an unforgettable experience, specially for the guys who love military stuff. This one is so amazing because it is set on the World War II, with an amazing idea and selection of unique characters. It is a master piece just like Cars. Everything is superb and superior to a lot <more>
of the 3d stuff out there, the things worth mentioning are the Sound and visual, both looking great. What I liked the most, is that this movie has no annoying scenes like the baby crying on Monsters S.A or the annoying baby from Ice Age 1, sometimes I fail to watch those movies because of that. To conclude, the movie starts and ends with a superb storyline, don't miss it for the world, and don't be fooled, this movie had little propaganda and got forgotten too fast, it was not fair since it is one of the greatest titles ever released.I must also use this space to complain about the Brazilian company who released this DVD in Brazil. They released only one version of it and it was in Full screen, they seen to forget about the millions of people who own a widescreen television or appreciate the pure and original version of the movie, and choose to save money instead. They also deleted the original sound English forcing us to watch it in Portuguese and Spanish 5.1, something very stupid to be done since we all hate voice over even the kids complained about this . So, make sure your DVD has the Original English 5.1 sound and not 2.0 with the original Widescreen size. It is ten times more beautiful and awesome in that way!
Heart-warming tale wrapped in superb CGI animation (by jediwebdude)
My entire family enjoyed this brilliant and humorous movie, which offered a heart-warming component. The story line is captivating from the very beginning and retains full attention throughout. Bird-themed humor is consistently intertwined. Animation is first rate, as are the action scenes. The voice over actors and actresses are convincing and funny. The story wasn't entirely predictable, especially the latter half. Predictability seems to be a problem with many of the CGI animations produced recently. Interestingly unprecedented in CGI animations is the underlying historical element <more>
presented in this genius flick: the role of messenger pigeons in World War II.
The Need Is There to Make More Like This. (by Keetoo)
Alright, we all know this was a cartoon and not a movie, but this was based on real history making birds that got awarded for being depended on when needed in the throngs of World War Two. At the end of this fine cartoon they acknowledged that not only the pigeons, but dogs and a cat had been awarded medals in helping win the war effort. Have there been any movies made in the past to tell these stories? I can't remember. If anyone could though it should be Disney, they seem to have the wonderful sensitivity to do stories like that. This is stuff that should always be brought up to the <more>
forefront to let future generations know the great ingenuity of past generations. What's wrong with that? Keep the past remembered! Honor those who deserved it. Make more movies, yes - even cartoons, like this. Bravo!
Much underrated, resourceful, witty - in one word: recommended (by vertigogirl21)
I only saw this movie yesterday and I must say it is hugely underrated. The story is very resourceful, funny, witty and interesting, the characters are well-written and I personally find it really refreshing after having seen many technically convincing animation movies without a really original details in the story like Monsters vs Aliens last time, e.g. .By the way, the animation is also great here, especially the development of the characters, the fascinating English landscapes and buildings or the stormy sea and the warships, which are formidable. The cast of voices is hilarious, Ewan <more>
McGregor, Hugh Laurie, Ricky Gervais or Jim Broadbent, just to mention a few. Finally, what I really liked about Valiant is that it lacks any form of "wanting to be cool", it doesn't have the arrogant self-righteous, self-reflective tone I find nowadays with many animation pieces. Taking place during the Second World War, it is a great tale which is not barely the figment of the creators' imagination, so this makes it even more worthwhile to see. The music is also authentic and my favourite, but even if it's not yours, I'm sure this film has enough virtues to be seen by the young or the older ones as well. I've downgraded it by 1 star only because I found the burping jokes a bit too excessive at one point, but otherwise, it's highly recommended.
A thoroughly enjoyable British adventure (by lyndon_gray)
I saw this film at the World Premiere in London. It has an incredible all star British cast including Ewan McGregor, John Cleese, Ricky Gervais, Jim Broadbent, the list goes on. It's a simple story of a smaller than average pigeon who decides to join the Homing Pigeon Service. The animation is first rate and the characterisations are excellent. Smaller children may be a little scared of the scenes with the hawks, but this is only a minor foible. It's a thoroughly British story though and there are only English accents and voices. I hope our American cousins aren't put off by this, <more>
after all we Brits watch a lot of American movies, be they cartoon, CGI or live action. It's fun and it has a real feel good factor about it and tells a wartime story about animals being the heroes for a change, which is nice. Go and see it, you won't be disappointed.
Hilarious for adults and children alike! (by Tonsku)
This is an animated comedy of a British Valiant-pigeon who enlists to "The Royal Pigeon Message Service" of the World War II. Falcons represent German's Luftwaffe and French animal resistance is in the hands of mice! Overall impression is quite like with Chicken Run, only this is made with computer animation. It has come to be a habit for animations to contain loads of references to other movies and general pop-culture so that adults can have their own fun while their descendants laugh at animation characters' slapstick. This film makes no exception in that sense. But it does <more>
this mixing superbly. Additional credit has to be given to makers because the WW II might be considered a-bit-harder-than-usual subject for a kid-flick. The cast is excellent. Especially Ricky Gervais' character Bugsy felt so much alive that I almost waited him to break through the shell of an animated character and become visible on-screen. This comes not only from the voice but from delicately characterized animation, though. There are no songs disrupting the storytelling and there is some mild violence well, in war there is, right? , so this might be not the best choice for the very youngest children? Not Shrek, but a quite hilarious little film for adults and children alike!
Valiant Ewan McGregor is the tale of a young pigeon who wants to be a courier pigeon for World War II. Unfortunately it is harder than it looks. This is a universal rating and an excellent film - a must watch for everyone. It has some great actors including Ewan McGregor as Valiant. The graphics and computer animation is truly amazing, and it has a good sense of humour. What more could you want? This is an enjoyable film and I DO recommend it to everyone. As I said already, the cast list is great. It is based upon the tales of real life and how treacherous the World Wars were. I saw this <more>
quite early out and was thrilled by the amount of fun it gave me.
