Smart, funny, multi-layered insight and politically astute (by ayesha-921-534378) |
This is a must see movie, for anyone who is looking for great entertainment, conscious reflection on the signs of our times, great acting, writing and direction. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie, I left the cinema beaming and had my mind totally exercised by the multi-layered messages and relevant political commentary that needs to be said - but said cleverly and subtlety so not to distress those who are less aware. Chris Rock is a genius - this movie is an example of his incredible talents manifested. Go see. |
Top Five is Top Notch (by rcastl2335) |
I've seen this movie twice now and I've absolutely enjoyed it both times. It's one of the very best movies I've seen this year. Always a smart, snappy stand up comic, it's great to see Chris Rock mature into both a good writer and a good actor. He's handles himself with a maturity and self-confidence--even in scenes where his character is faltering, that makes the movie shine. He and Rosario Dawson have great chemistry together, working off each other like Tracy and Hepburn. There's a long list of supporting characters, Gabriel Union and JB Smoove at the top of the <more> |
Don't listen to the white people. A great romantic comedy (by judethaduis) |
Before I begin my review, I'll start by saying, I will not be surprised if IMDb removed this, because 99% of their users are whites "caucasians" if you care about being P.C . Please actually take the time to see this movie before you decide to skip. "Top five" is critically acclaimed and has won a handful of awards; how come it has such a low rating? The reasons for the low rating is because IMDb has so many caucasians on its platform. If you think I'm being ignorant, look up great black films like "Malcom X", "Do the right thing", "Menace 2 <more> |
I'm most impressed with Rock's skills as a director and film writer! (by Hellmant) |
'TOP FIVE': Four and a Half Stars Out of Five Chris Rock wrote, directed and stars in this comedy flick about a former stand-up comedian, and popular movie star, who tries to make it in serious film; while also marrying a reality TV star, on TV. It costars Rosario Dawson, Gabrielle Union, Kevin Hart, J.B. Smoove and many others. It also features cameos from celebrities like Tracy Morgan, Cedric the Entertainer, DMX, Whoopi Goldberg, Adam Sandler and Jerry Seinfeld. The film has gotten almost unanimously positive reviews from critics and has been nominated for multiple awards as well <more> |
Did its job of being funny (by wadjet-79-52782) |
This movie was funny, really funny. It made me laugh out loud. Because it made me laugh and enjoy myself I give it a nine. I have not seen a comedy in a long time that made me laugh out loud like that. That being said I do agree with the other reviewers about somethings. The flow was kind of bad. The acting was good but the writing was so-so. The romance was kind of bad. It was a little extra R rated if you know what I mean. But no star off for these things because black movies usually have extra r rating. And I did not go to see an ultimate production or a romance comedy, I just went to <more> |
Funny, Charming and Thoroughly Entertaining (by trublu215) |
Top Five marks the return to form of Chris Rock. Having been out of the spotlight for the past decade or so and only doing Sandler comedies such as Grown Ups, it is really great to see him return with a film like this. Top Five is undeniably funny and Chris Rock's script is so subtly satirical, it strikes a perfect balance between telling a story and developing well rounded characters. Featuring Rock himself with the likes of Tracy Morgan, Rosario Dawson, Top Five works very well as a character ensemble as well. Telling the story of an aging comedian who wants to do serious work within <more> |
Funniest movie I've seen in years (by btbullet-1) |
At the time of this review IMDb voters have scored this movie 7. I'm here to say it well deserves more than that -- and this from a really R-rated conservative moviegoer. I laughed through almost every minute of this film. Yes, it was the most uncomfortable laughter ever, like a big scary roller coaster ride. And when it was over, I said, "Whew!" And that's is precisely what shines about this film, and Chris Rock. He, and his writers, if there are any, are genius. The editing, and production alone were stellar. I CANNOT get the vision of Chris Rick blowing a feather out of <more> |
A Cinderella Story (by ThomasDrufke) |
The critically acclaimed but underrated audience film Top Five is genius. Not only is it a return to glory for Chris Rock, it's a really great dramatic film. IMDb doesn't list it as drama, but I think the dramatic moments of Top Five were even better than the inevitably hysterical moments. It tells the story of Andre Allen, a comedian and movie star who is struggling to reach the heights of his early career while simultaneously being interviewed by a journalist and preparing for his wedding.Top Five caught me off guard. I figured with the cast it has and the premise that it presented, <more> |
Hilarious (by indiedavid) |
I am baffled by the negative reviews for this film. I am also baffled by the "racism" comments. I am white as were three of the people I was with and we all laughed out loud during the whole film. People really need thicker skins. There is a lot of racial humor but it is well balanced, just like Rock's stand up. If you don't get that, you are probably insecure with yourself. Cedric the Entertainer and Tracy Morgan were supporting characters but absolutely hilarious. JB Smoove was a more serious character but he nailed the role. This film wasn't exactly what I expected, <more> |
