Plot: Superstar magicians Burt Wonderstone (Steve Carell) and Anton Marvelton (Steve Buscemi) have ruled the Las Vegas Strip for years, raking in millions with illusions as big as Burt's growing ego. But lately the duo's greatest deception is their public friendship, while secretly they've grown to loathe each other. Facing cutthroat competition from guerrilla street magician Steve Gray (Jim Carrey), whose cult following surges with each outrageous stunt, even their show is starting to look stale. But there's still a chance Burt and Anton can save the act - both onstage and off - if only Burt can get back in touch with what made him love magic in the first place. Runtime: 100 mins Release Date: 14 Mar 2013
I dunno why people hate this movie, or why have they rated it so low. Oh wait, I kinda do. They just don't get it.Before CGI, before VFX, all people had were real magicians doing elaborate and jaw dropping acts, in theaters, where live audiences were entertained, not some recorded and processed show. The movie essentially captures that golden age and blends a heart-warming story with magic.Stellar performances by Steve Carrell, Steve Buscemi, Jim Carrey and Olivia Wilde. An absolute delight. A must watch, whether or not you like magic.
Incredibly funny (by phd_travel)
There are some hysterically funny moments in this movie - and many other laugh out loud moments. A big name duo magic act faces some tough competition from a new extreme magician. The performances are endearing and well acted. Jim Carrey acts as only he could in this Criss Angel type extreme magician. It's good to see Steve Carrell in a laugh out loud role compared to the rather maudlin romantic comedy things he has been doing a lot of. Steve Buscemi shows a not often seen comic side and is good in his role. Olivia Wilde is a bit rounder looking and looks much prettier because of it. <more>
Poignantly this is one of the last James Gandolfini movies. The magic is inventive and great fun to watch. Can't understand why it wasn't a bigger hit at the box office. One of the funnier comedies of recent years.
Laugh out loud comedy, highly recommended, (by HerbieVore)
I couldn't fault this movie, there were many LOL moments. If you'd enjoy a comedy that is really funny and witty, devoid of toilet/banal/base "humour", you're in for a real treat! All performances were so good, no weaknesses here! Indeed the only weaknesses were from me, crying with laughter! The set pieces none of which I shall spoil are comedy gold! Certainly cannot believe the lower scores from some reviewers both user and critic . The best comedy I've seen in many a long time! My advice is give this movie a chance, you won't be disappointed! You don't <more>
need to wait very long for the laughs to start. The deadpan expressions, the wonderful performances from the starring actors, the brilliant supporting actors make this movie a must-see. Absolutely brilliant!
Who doesn't like magic and be in aw? That is one of the observations by master magician Rance Holloway Alan Arkin as he shares with Burt Wonderstone. In The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, this magician Burt Wonderstone Steve Carrel is on the top of his career shared by his magical friendship co- showman Anton Marvelton Steve Buscemi . They are on top at the world playing their own show in Las Vegas, then they are challenged by new comer Steve Gray Jim Carrey who claims to be a "mind rapist" and not afraid to push the boundaries of normal to get a good reaction. Their <more>
challenge is to stay relevant is a world that seeks guts to simply glory. Steve Carrell plays a good "diva" in Burt Wonderstone. This is a silly, funny movie and slyly pokes fun at some well known magicians. I loved it and abracadabra you will soon reappear with a smile.
I didn't have very high expectations for this movie, given what I had heard about it. With that being said, I was left wondering why this movie didn't get more positive reviews/higher ratings. There were moments that left me thinking that it was going to go in a very predictable direction and disappoint me in the end, but I was wrong.I think Jim Carrey really held this movie together. I couldn't hold back laughing every time he came on the screen. One of his better roles as of late.I would recommend that you definitely give this movie a chance, regardless of what you've <more>
I heard such bad things about this movie, that I didn't go see it. Big mistake, this is a funny wonderful comedy. I guess some people think Adam Sandler movies are good. I don't get it. OK the structure was a little worn out, I felt like it was following a well worn path, but the it made me laugh and I enjoyed the ride. As usual Steve Carrell was great as a narcissistic D-list celebrity starring in a cheesy Las Vegas act. I lived in Vegas for 25 years and I can tell you that entertainers like him hang on to the same tired act way to long. I'm talking about you Wayne Newton When <more>
he tries to spruce up the act, well its hard to teach an old dog new tricks. As always Steve Buscemi supports the star with a weird characterization. I'd heard that Jim Carey was hardly in the movie. Missed the point. Carey played an offer the top magician who injures his body and thinks its magic. Yes it entertains but how long can he go on? I thought he was hysterical, reminded me of the fire chief he played on In Living Color.Gotta mention Olivia Wilde. Can't get enough of her. Looks and her presence drew my attention to her in every scene she was in. I think I would watch her read the phone book.Critics said this was a drama masquerading as a comedy. So many bad movies pull this trick. It killed the box office. It was a shame, this movie was pure fun. Its not too late pay per view it.
Other REVIEWERS have lost their innocent sense of Humour (by user-634-758817)
The problem with most reviews today is that people have lost their innocence and playfulness the world once new.The days when the family would go to the cinema together and buy popcorn and coke and it was a rare treat for all seem to have been replaced with an over critical and harsh assessment of anything!! The film itself deals with a similar subject when Burt Wonderstone loses his ability to realise that to somebody, even an old trick is a new one that can bring wonderment to even the oldest audience.Lets stop and look at the film for what it is! Its not supposed to be a drama or intense <more>
film like The Green Mile. Its a innocent throw back to the era of stage magicians when rabbits from hats would trigger gasps of amazement by crossed legged kids watching in the front row.The introduction of a 'Criss Angelesque' character was to show the shift in social attitudes in regards to what we consider entertainment is and jim carrey does it hysterically .Yes the story is not meant to be compared to anything of a serious nature but does have some underlying content that should make us think a little.Today when films like 'Kickass' and 'Jackass' seem to warrant high ratings and are viewed by kids its sad to see such a fun, innocent and laughable film getting a bad rap.In Australia at my cinema everyone was in hysterics and this was a late session 1/4 full .If you liked Jerry Lewis and can still laugh ... you'll love it if you enjoyed the fun of films like back to the future ... you will love it If hearing a 13 year old girl in kickass say "Suck my &*#$" was funny to you... then you missed the boat on what funny really is.Take a chance be amazed and let yourself laugh like no one is around... let it out and let the joy of "Burt WOnderstone" lighten you heart for just a couple of hours.
Before I begin, I realize that I'm going to come off as a little biased towards this particular film, simply because I was such a huge fan of magic growing up. So, with that said, if you're not a fan of magic, or weren't at some point in your life, and wish to read an unbiased review of "The Incredible Burt Wonderstone", then, what can I tell you? Go read someone else's review."The Incredible Burt Wonderstone" is the funniest thing Steve Carell has done since "The 40 Year Old Virgin". And, even though I thought "I Love You Phillip <more>
Morris" a film nobody saw was an excellent movie, this particular comedy about a silly little magician rivalry contains the funniest and most watchable performance Jim Carrey has given in over a decade. The premise surrounds nerdy boyhood best friends, who grow up to become the infamous stage magicians Burt Wonderstone Carell and Anton Marvelton Steve Buscemi ; sort of an American version of Siegfried and Roy without the tiger. They advertize themselves as having "a magical friendship", as their outdated act stands as the featured attraction on the Vegas strip. But when a Criss Angel-esque street magician named Steve Gray begins to take the duo's fan base away by performing a myriad of gruesome and outlandish "magic tricks", Wonderstone and Marvelton must find a way to freshen up their act before their style of magic is left in the past. The Acting: Yes this film also stars Olivia Wilde and Alan Arkin. And yes, Wilde doesn't really do anything but participate as the very weak love interest, and Arkin continues his long standing decision to play himself as long as the Oscar nominations keep rolling in BUT the overwhelming reason this film works so well is due to a few perfectly realized characters. Jim Carrey does such a spot on Criss Angel from the title of his show, to the gross-out factor of his act that every time he is on screen, the comedic bar is raised substantially. As for Carell, he portrayals a pompous headliner with such egotistical verve, that his performance can only be described as Michael Scott-esque. Even Buscemi, who is not at all a comedic actor, is used strategically well, as a sort of comedic voice of reason.Final Thought: While I understand that a majority of critics have called this film a "hit and miss", focusing on the simplistic storyline rather than the hilarious performances, or hiding behind the vastly overused "all comedy is subjective" theory, which some critics fall back on in order to undersell funny movies, it is my opinion that many of these "rotten tomato" opinions are unfairly misguided. The writing team of John Francis Daley known best for his role on "Freaks and Geeks" and Jonathan Goldstein have manufactured a script that is as smart and witty as last year's "21 Jump Street", and more importantly, worthy of two of the best comedic actors of this generation. OK, so this film is not perfect by any means. There is an unnecessary love story jammed in the middle of this thing, and I can understand how the initial twenty minutes may bore some audiences, especially if you aren't a fan of magic or wouldn't be caught dead watching an episode of "Mind Freak". BUT, I will say that after its initial bumpiness, the rest of "The Incredible Burt Wonderstone" is consistently entertaining, delivering a multitude of well formulated early Apatow-esque laughs. The silliness everyone in the family enjoys deserves more than a 5 rating (by fahimakhter)
We're too harsh on comedy titles, we want them to be perfect and epic. It is okay for comedies to be silly, stupid and out there at times. We never hold the same standard for thrillers we watch the same formula plots over and over again and still be okay with it. But with comedies oh no why did they do that , its stupid. As apposed to the 1 min hacker of pentagon in every film. It's a genuinely funny the story of two life long friends and magicians who share a magical act and are threatened by the modern chris angelisc magician played by Jim Carrey. I cannot think of another person <more>
playing the role. A story of a long lost love for magic dusted by fame and money over the years. Steve carrel is his awkward a bit toned down 'The Office' self trying to get back on his feet and getting a little help along the way. A great Sunday watch with the family.
