Plot: Ellen Brody still lives in the island resort town of Amity, and her sons Sean and Michael don't work at Sea World anymore, and some time ago, Ellen's husband Martin Brody died of a heart attack that happened because he was afraid of sharks. Sean is now a deputy in Amity. One night, during the Christmas season, Sean is called to untangle a log from a buoy, and when Sean goes to the buoy, he's killed by a great white shark. After hearing about this, Michael, who is studying to be a marine biologist, visits Amity with his wife Carla and his 5-year-old daughter Thea. Wanting to get away from Amity and spend Christmas with Michael, Carla, and Thea, Ellen goes with them to their house in the Bahamas on an airplane whose pilot is Hoagie Newcombe, and Hoagie starts falling for Ellen. Michael's friend Jake, who is also studying to be a marine biologist, lives next door to Michael. Sometime later, while Michael and Jake are out at sea, their boat is attacked by the shark that killed Sean. Michael and Jake try to tag the shark so they can keep track of it. Sometime later, while Thea and some of her friends are on a banana boat, a yellow boat shaped like a banana, the shark attacks the banana boat and kills a woman, leaving Thea in shock, but it looks like Thea will be okay. Carla is mad at Michael for not telling her that the shark is in the waters of the Bahamas. Michael and Jake didn't mention the shark, because they didn't want to upset Ellen and mess up her visit. Ellen believes that the shark is after her family and that it was trying to kill Thea instead of the woman it killed, so Ellen takes Michael's boat out to sea on a single-minded mission to find the shark and kill it while Michael, Hoagie, and Jake try to find Ellen because they're afraid the shark will kill Ellen before Ellen can kill the shark. Runtime: 89 mins Release Date: 16 Jul 1987
Underrated. Second best in the series. *** out of 5 (by pumpkinhead_lance)
I just don't see why this film would be in the bottom one hundred. I realize there are some flaws but as a whole I really don't feel this is a bad film at all. The acting was really good. Lorraine Gary really was convincing as a paranoid widow. I understand that the fact that a great white shark following them to Bremuda is a little hard to believe, but this film is basically about how the Brody family for some reason have always been cursed by sharks. It's also about confronting your fears. Michael Cain plays a very likable bloke and Lance Guest and Mario Peebles are solid <more>
actors. The special effects aren't the greatest, but I didn't feel they were the worst ever either. Some of my favorite moments include the opening credits sequence set to Michael Small's pulse pounding score. In fact, this theme is an excellent extension of the original theme written by John Williams. It's a soundtrack I listen to often yes, I even own a very rare promo CD of the score . Speaking of 'Jaws The Revenge' memorabilia, I actually have a framed original one sheet to this film hanging on my door... but back to my favorite scenes...The banana boat sequence was suspenseful and the moment where Michael Caine's plane swoops over the boat just in time to see the shark rise up from the ocean is excellent. There are some great things going on in this film and I think people should back off and take a look at the film and forget about all the vitriol it so undeservedly gets.
This movie is so underrated it's unbelievable (by Truman-10)
OKAY, so it was never going to be as good as the original, but Jaws 4 has a lot going for it. The storyline is a good way to round off the Brody saga, the cast are all pretty good, the shark effects are excellent, and it's tense and exciting. And when the shark appears it's as scary as ever. The music wisely sticks closely to the familiar, unnerving theme, and the idea of Ellen Brody obsessed with the shark that she thinks is intentionally hunting her family is a good one - and we never find out if she's right or just delusional through grief. The shark attacks are frightening, <more>
and some of the photography is superb. Above all, Jaws 4 isn't as good as Jaws, but it's far better than Jaws 3D and is solid entertainment.
Why is it that co-called 'movie critics' always seem to hate sequels? I bet half the time they don't even bother to watch the movie themselves. If anyone had actually bothered to to watch Jaws 4 they'd soon realise that it's a great movie. Forget the first three movies in the series I can't remember what they were called, but don't bother looking them up - it ain't worth it this is the one to watch. It's got a great cast, a great script and a great villain. Some people complain about the low body-count in this movie. Well, I say if you want a high <more>
body-count go and hire out some 'dumb-a**' action movie like 'Cross of Iron'. Plenty of people die in that movie. What you get with Jaws 4 is a serious attempt to get inside the mind of Great White Shark. As it says on the movie's tag line "This time... it's personal". And it certainly is as the shark seeks to avenge the deaths of the other sharks in the previous movies by swimming off to the Bahamas in an attempt to eat Lorraine Gary she's the wife of the guy in the first two movies . And who can blame it? Sharks always seem to be cast as bad guys in the movies just look at all those James Bond movies - the bad guy always seems to keep killer sharks as pets . People seem to forget that the sharks were there first, no wonder they get a bit annoyed when idiots in boats keep chasing them, and anyhow they're only trying to get something to eat. How would you like it every time you went into Burger King for a Big Whopper you got some guy chasing you with a harpoon gun? Also, some people complain that the shark isn't very realistic, that its rubber teeth can sometimes be seen bending - well you'd hardly expect them to use a real shark! It's also great to see a major Hollywood movie with a 'mature' woman leading the cast, not some 20 year old bimbo with silicon implants. Maybe that's what a lot of the critics didn't like - a strong, intelligent middle-aged woman.
I actually quite like this film, OK its not as good as 1 or 2 but its much better than 3D. There are lots of things people can pick faults with, The shark balancing on the water, but if you watch it as a film and put all the "it couldn't happen" out of your mind, you will see this film is quite good. People always say "Oh, that wouldn't happen in real life", thats because ITS A MOVIE! That is the whole point of films, to do things can you can't do in reality.Anyway, back to the film, The fact that this film ignores the events of Jaws 3-D, is a bad idea but, the <more>
film survives well with what you are given. A shark related to one of the other sharks, attacking the remainders of the Broady family for revenge. Farfeched? OK maybe a little but overall this film, by reverting back to the originals formula, is very good. 9/10
VERY GOOD if you use your SUSPENSION OF DISBELIEF (by jooniceton)
This film is NOT as bad as you are all saying. You are all simply agreeing for the sake of agreeing. Sharks DO roar in South Africa - ACTUALLY. So that's shut you critics up. The plot is INTERESTING and ENTERTAINING, even if far-fetched. You are ALL MISSING THE POINT.Nobody set out to make a Biological documentary on sharks. This is a FICTIONAL piece. Hence, it does not have to make perfect sense all the time. So when you losers criticise the fact that JAWS swam from New York to Bahamas in days, take heed to my aforesaid point. This is ENTERTAINMENT. NOT INTENDED TO BE FACTUAL. Get over <more>
it you saddos. Utilise your SUSPENSION OF DISBELIEF if you know what that is + you will find the movie highly engaging. This is in fact my favourite of all the JAWS sequels. The cast is great, especially Lorraine Gary. The Shark does NOT look fake - AT ALL, despite what you may have heard. The banana boat attack is tense and done well. The film works well as it incorporates drama, romance, action + adventure, and comedy into its standard horror/thriller plot. CHECK IT OUT - this movie IS COOL.
this is the character I most like to associate with Caine. Just a freewheeling pilot with a bit of the ol shaharazad. Forgiving the sometimes spotty cues and the somewhat silly premise, although it could be said that the first jaws had a touch of fantasy to it, I mean we all know a giant shark couldn't hurt Robert Shaw. I find myself watching this movie quite often. Honestly, the cinematography is amazing in some parts, and what can I say, I'm a sucker for pre-digital effects. so,yes, while you could certainly find a " better " scary movie to watch, jaws the revenge will <more>
remain one of my standby late-night go-to's, due to it's silliness, it's heart, and the fact that it seems like the producers kept the cast happy & were smart enough to supply Caine with a trunk full of rum and free reign to improvise.plus did I mention I love giant shark movies?a great movie for people who don't take movies too seriously, and a great movie to watch with friends.
It's really not that bad. Having said that I do have some thought (by MMPSmaster)
As corny as this sequel to the famous "Jaws" series was. It certainly did redeem itself from Jaws 3-D, Which was one of the worst pictures of all time. The revenge did have a fruity storyline where sharks really do take things personally. Also when he dies at the end of the movie by being rammed with the boat, 'How does the shark spontaneously explode?' Really the writer of this film must have gotten desperate to find an interesting storyline. Another thing is In this movie the Shark was not the star. It was more about the characters and their lives. My point is their needed <more>
to be more Shark attacks in the movie. It was too. slow. Only two people actually get killed in the movie. Another disappointment is that Lorraine Gary never did another role after this movie which was sad considering that she does have a little talent left.
While Generally The Less Popular Installment, This Is Perhaps The Second Best! (by Elswet)
Most Jaws fans hate this installment, but I think the reason behind this emotion is more that this installment marks the end of the franchise, rather than because the movie was not worthy. The story is not afraid to admit its previous mistakes, returns us to the beginning when the franchise was awesome, and revisits old characters, while introducing us to new ground. And it works! Michael Caine is, as usual, stellar; but it is the return of Lorraine Gary as Ellen Brody that makes this chapter of the saga truly remarkable. Her performance, the story itself, and the fantastic effects-generated <more>
atmosphere truly uplift this could-be lackluster sequel into the annals of creature feature greatness. It rates an 8.4/10 from...the Fiend :.
