Hope DOES Spring (by claudiajoan4) |
I've been married 37 years and just like the movie says, "A lot of good marriages have some bad years." This is what summarized the storyline for me. The passage of time creates complacency and the doldrums needing a good blast of air in the sails to get it moving again. Going for a week of intensive therapy made sense in this case. One reviewer said they were robotic and yes, that was it...the morning routine, right down to placing the briefcase and jacket in the same spot every...single...day...DULLSVILLE! It was correct! It was perfectly handled, reserved wife doesn't <more> |
A tender film for all couples (by villard) |
This sensitive, insightful and well-performed film is highly recommended for couples of all ages. It is certainly a "date film" for those couples who have successfully stayed together through all of marriage's sometimes stormy adventures. You may easily find some deja vu moments, as we did. This is no rip roaring comedy for you Steve Carell lovers, but certainly kept me chuckling through the first hour. The story's slow pace and editing is a refreshing change from all the hyperactive films out there. It makes the film more like a reality TV piece. The sexual content is <more> |
This filmmaker is a miracle worker (by coiffuremixte) |
Hope Springs is a fantastic film. Last year had a lot of exceptional films and this was one of the very best.To put it in perspective, I'll say that I am not of the target demographic and that I also saw Marley and Me, a masterpiece worthy of Capra, cunningly disguised as a Jennifer Aniston rom-com with a dog in it, which prepared me in some way for an exceptional piece of work. Although Carrell and Streep are at their best, Tommy Lee Jones is in a state of grace for this film. He is brilliant, funny, fiercely believable. If you know him as an actor it's obvious that he is capable of <more> |
Touching and real and unexpected (by Ric-7) |
The trailer and marketing campaign for this film is another instance of a collection of sound bites making a film seem like something that it is not. This is NOT a geriatric sex comedy. In fact, I would not even call it a comedy. There are some laughs, several smiles, but most of the time I was in tears. If you go there expecting laughs, you may be disappointed. I went there with such expectations, and I was pleasantly surprised and amazed.I am about the same age as the couple, and I deal with divorcing couples every day. This film is so real and true-to-life, with no big fight or <more> |
Finally A Film That Resonates With Real People (by patsworld) |
There is no feeling of being lonesome so crushing as being in a room with someone, in a relationship with somebody, when the feeling is gone. This couple, married thirty one years, have discovered this, as some of us have at different times in our lives. Tommy Lee Jones is the husband, marred down in his married life that has dimmed into something he feels will never be bright again. Never expects it to be. Is perfectly willing to plod along through life as is with his anger and dismay at how things have turned out hidden and suppressed. Meryl Streep is his wife, loving and longing to be <more> |
Some plots aren't all about you... c'mon people! (by spelaeologus) |
It's always interesting to read people's reviews of movies and instead of getting a review, we get a paragraphs full of narcissism, relentless scrutiny, and disappointment. What reviewers have to understand is that yours is not the only perspective on what makes a good movie, in fact, good. The problem is, genuine realism is lost on those expecting the standard Hollywood-esque, brushed-canvasses, flawless plot lines, and riveting dialogue. Life is rarely like that and when a movie comes along that depicts some real-life humanity, with all our human idiosyncrasies and vulnerabilities, <more> |
Hope Springs delivers just as much emotion as laughs (by rgblakey) |
There are movies that come along that fall in numerous genres. The latest Hope Springs seems to be pushing the comedy but sports a story that could easily be delivering the drama so going in is already somewhat of a mystery on what to really expect. With a stellar cast of Meryl Streep, Tommy Lee Jones, and Steve Carell is there any way this film couldn't work on some level? Hope Springs follows a married couple who have grown apart. They head out to Hope Springs to attempt to rekindle their lost spark, but with a skeptical husband reluctant to take on the treatment is there any chance of <more> |
The spark is within (by JankiSharma) |
Meryl Streep as Kay is the homemaker, mother of two grown up kids, a wife whose duties include making breakfast for husband and setting up the table for meals. But Kay also has her biological needs and desires to be kissed, held and loved by her husband. She can do it all. She can be a mother, a wife and also have same longing and passion for love making with her husband that she had when romance started between the two thirty one years back. But husband Arnold Tommy Lee Jones has shut out his sexual feelings for his wife over the years. Arnold does have sexual fantasies which include a <more> |
