Better Than People Want You To Think (by christophermoonlight)
This is actually a much better movie than I see a lot of people giving it credit for. This is a fun B-movie with really clever use of practical effects and miniatures which most of the time will not be spotted, because they're integrated so well combined with clever camera work and editing. The story is basic but fun, with some interesting if subtle character arches, such as that between Svet and Big G, that play out through the entirety of the film. They really did deliver more than most low budget horror features that get more praise than this movie is earning. Of course band-wagoners <more>
will always line up to heap hate on anyone who dares to do something more than just another slasher film or found footage rehash. I think once the hipster crowed is done being better than this film, retro punks and young horror fans alike will form fond memories of group movie nights over popcorn and Harbinger Down. I look forward to what studioADI comes up with next.
From The Master Special Effects Technician Who Has Worked In Films Like Aliens 1986 , The Monster Squad 1987 and Tremors 1990 . (by Vivekmaru45)
If you loved the special effects in John Carpenter's The Thing, you dare not miss this film. The special effects are just unbelievable. You'll just have to see for yourself, how good they are. Obviously, when a special-FX man himself directs a picture, just as Stan Winston directed the cult horror film Pumpkinhead 1988 , you'll know that you are you're in for a real treat. The plot of the film deals with a soviet space shuttle that has crash landed into the icy cold waters of the Bering sea. A group of graduate students aboard the titular fishing trawler Harbinger, who are <more>
studying the effects of global warming on a pod of Orcas in the Bering Sea, accidentally stumble upon a distress beacon which is emanating from a submerged block of ice. They recover the soviet wreckage, examine it, and find the frozen corpses of the Soviet astronauts within. What happens next is for you to see and find out. Verdict: a decent cast, with veteran actor Lance Henriksen at the helm. The pretty Camille Balsamo reminds me of actress Sandra Bullock. Also Winston James Francis gives a wonder performance as Big G. He reminded me of the W.W.E. wrestler Paul Donald Wight Jr. a.k.a. Big Show . Winston is a very versatile actor. The sound-effects, photography and acting is professionally handled. It should be noted that this film began by funds from fan donations through Kickstarter.Want more special effect films? Haven't seen but know the back story. (by clintonmohr)
This film is basically the events leading up the thing movie released in the 80's. The people who originally made the thing in the 2000's had all their work covered in cgi and after getting tired of getting hate because the cgi was bad and everyone thought it was them they released this movie. Which is basically all the shots they had done put under a different name and such.
Low Budget.. But not Cheap!!! (by Marcwolf-2)
OK.. I may be a bit bias but please read my reasons. This is a homage to the practical creature effects. Nearly $400,000 was raised by the Kickstarter campaign, to which ADI added their own skills and expertise. Mose of the actors are not well known except for Lance, and he gave his skills for free to keep costs down. That being said - we have a movie that did not have the multi million backing of big studios. On what would have been a shoestring budget. Locations would have been limited, and the number sets reduced too.Is it a good movie - for what it sets out to achieve then Yes.. There is NO <more>
CGI here, all the effects are real and touchable, the slime is cold and slippery, and the blood would be.. well at blood temp.To compare it against the recent "The Thing" which had a budget of #38mill, and this which was about $2mil max then what they have done is great. So enjoy a good creepy movie - but accept that a lot of this was a labor of love :
In the sunken nightmare ship of Harbinger, Russian water-bears sleep waiting. Before I go and tell you about the movie experience, you should know that this film is a Kickstarter movie, with more than 350 thousand dollars coming from that campaign, and made by people with vast experience with practical effects. You see, Hollywood uses CGI nowadays because it is cheaper and it has become a hallmark of fancy directors to use practical effects, all other movies relying on the cheapest alternative around. Cherish it, like you did fat and ugly radio stars before MTV came around. The plot is pretty <more>
much a rip-off of The Thing. That is not accidental, because it is the same team that worked on the recent remake before the studios decided to go with CGI instead. The characters are archetypal, like in most films of the genre, with pretty decent acting all around. Lance Henriksen is great, of course, but even the rest of the actors give professional performances. What I liked also is that the characters themselves were borderline interesting making the entire feel more engaging when adding a little depth to them. The special effects were just great for the budget they had and in conclusion I would go as far as say they accomplished their mission of creating a movie fans would enjoy and a nice homage to the great horror movies of the late 70s and early 80s.Was the science accurate? Hell no. Was there a larger than life moral that one can leave the theater with and become a better person? Unless you count "do not join academia if you don't have the stomach for pompous self-absorbed a-wipes", then no. Was it fun? Oh, yeah!
I think it would be easy to criticize this movie in the context of the current climate of cinema movies being released as it doesn't fit in to this era at all. That said I think it will hold up over time like many titles you didn't expect to do so. It works as a homage to the great creature horror movies of previous decades like Alien/s and The Thing and has that magic ingredient of keeping me 'in' for the duration of what would otherwise be a schlocky genre. The special effects, which were all practical effects I found very enjoyable to watch. In some scenes they aren't <more>
as sleek as I would have liked but mostly they had that creepy-artistic effect that I haven't seen in a while. The characters were a little stereotyped but that is fine in this kind of film, and they all seemed to be having a fun time on set which again isn't a common commodity in Hollywood anymore. It would hold up very nicely as part of a retro horror night of films alongside the likes of The Thing, but more in the arena of the home cinema; a movie to watch with a beer, and since this is where all movies end up maybe it is the true yardstick.
Nostagic and takes you back in time. Awesome! (by cloud-exes)
Hey Guys! Just wanna say that this movie is totally underrated! It's a great homage to all the great horror movies the thing, aliens, poltergeist, chucky/child's play and so forth and so forth. where it's used props mostly instead of just cgi! They brougth with them a veteran crew for special effects and we are talking Oscar guys! I think this is a' really great movie with all that you would want from a scary movie, and pay in mind that this film was shot in a very short time with not the biggest budget. This movie has loads of great scenes and i think that go in with an open <more>
mind and you will really enjoy this film, decide for your self not base it on ratings! I would truly recommend this cool movie to all great horror film fans! Awesome job by the whole crew!!
