Yet another impressive film from director Adam Mason (by lucyloo7122)
Adam Mason's latest film "Hangman" is the tale of a creepy, disturbed home invasion. The story unfolds sequentially, both from the perspective of an innocent family who set out on holiday, only to return to find their home ransacked; and their twisted tormentor who is far from content at leaving it there.Shot entirely using security cameras and hand held video recorders, Hangman benefits from Mason's fast, punchy editing to create a more dynamic, hard-hitting way of storytelling than is usually seen with this style of film making. The cast throughout are excellent. Sisto Law and Order and Kate Ashfield Shaun of the Dead have a great chemistry, both delivering credibly as concerned parents under attack. The child cast members, Ryan Simpkins and Ty Simpkins, again play well against each other as squabbling, playful siblings. Together the close knit family gradually realise that home is no longer the safe haven it once was. My personal favourite character however was Eric Michael Cole, who portrays the demented intruder. Rather than balls to the wall intensity, Cole's subtle shades create a genuinely unsettling experience, which really helped to amp up the tension. His barefooted, masked, knife wielding psychopath preyed upon an unknowing family, literally tempting fate for his moment to strike. In fact, the standout moments of Hangman are during these "will he, won't he?" scenes, when the intruder takes chances, pushes his luck and gets as close as possible to the family without actually coming face to face. I've been a long-time fan of British director Adam Mason, from first watching Pig back in 2010. He's a bold story teller, with a growing list of memorable and twisted movies to his credit. Mason likes to deliver a final punch in the last scene of his films, and Hangman is no exception. Yet another solid piece of work to add to his impressive filmography, well worth investing your time in.Special mention also needs to be given to film's composer Antoni Maiovvi https://maiovvi.bandcamp.com/ . His chilling distorted Italo disco brings sinister echoes of John Carpenter, Goblin and Tangerine Dream.
I've honestly watched this movie probably 6 different times since it released and I've loved every time I watched it. Most of the POV found footage style killer movies, you don't really see it from the perspective of the killer. To me, when people complain about the lack of info on the character, I think it slowly starts to creep in throughout the story. I found that the movie is more about getting to know him rather than the family. The beginning: "tell me you love me.." before stabbing the woman in the first film invasion was pretty haunting. I'll get to where I <more>
think is starting the evolution of his character within the story. When you see him stalking his next family, you start seeing a trend, as well as the next family at the end. They all have short blonde hair. Now to which, I'm going to say resembles a possible ex-wife. I think they may have had kids and the wife ended up remarrying. Now he sets out to find that one that "got away" to ensure no one else can ever have her and his family but him. During the film, you see him trying to "include himself" in her life. Causing disruptions in their house and as well their marriage. Trying to create conflicts between them in hopes of getting rid of him and allowing her all to himself. That moment when he's freaking out in the crawl space and crying, he's reflecting on how hurt he was when "the old love" left him and caused his mental breakdown. When he's pleasuring himself watching them have sex, he's trying to simply picture himself being with her at that moment...being with his old love. Later on in the film, when he starts following around the daughter and her boyfriend, I think its himself playing the "paternal father figure" and wanting to get rid of the boyfriend that will not be good enough for his "daughter."In the end, I don't think he can actually move on from his ex wife and the whole conflict of the divorce was never actually resolved. There was never any kind of closure. So he sets out to find the resemblance of what he once knew in order to take back what he wants all along, his family, because he can't face the real face of his ex wife. He's desperately wanting his former love to simply tell him that, "I love you." So that's his main goal with these women. When asked, "Do you love me," he's seeking his "former wife" to admit her love still remains. If she says it, he can now move on with his life. If not, then kills her out of anger for not loving him. I do think when the 2nd blonde actually says, "I love you", he only kills her because he know's she didn't mean it. In other words, it's going to be a continuous cycle until he specifically get's exactly what he wants. Which may never come. After reading this, give the movie another chance with this in the back of your mind. Hopefully you will end up actually changing your mind :
Ignore the hate - a genuinely disturbing movie (by djcalver)
I'm really surprised at the negative reception of the film, so went into this film expecting to turn it off after 10 minutes. However, given that the majority of raters probably also contributed to rating the awful borefest that is 'Gravity' a 7.8/10, I should've done what I normally do and completely ignored the ratings and most reviews.'Hangman' is a genuinely disturbing film. For fans of 'real' horror and by that I mean things that absolutely could happen, disregarding ghosts and evil spirits , then this is perfect. Almost everything that happens in the <more>
film could definitely happen to people, and in various ways probably does. Yes, slight artistic licence has of course been taken, but overall this film touches way too close to home. The best comparison I can make is to the wonderful flick that was 'Creep' 2014 , in that the main antagonist is a truly disturbed individual, yet undoubtedly fairly common in today's world and most definitely real. The film, although slow paced, burns consistently, and there aren't many dull moments. The ending, just like the opening sequence, are shocking, and the brutal moments that punctuate the film are almost too much to watch - yet nothing is too far-fetched.So, with that said, I would definitely recommend this film if you enjoy 'found footage' films in general, or are a fan of horrors where the events could - and probably do - happen.
Not a Horror to me but more a intense thriller (by jonerogers)
Well I am a Horror fan and so picking this for that reason but alas it was not such a horror as it seemed. Having said that i was on the edge of my seat a number of times as the suspense of the next act was upon me. A film that kept me and my partner entertained and with a cast of people i have not seen before except for Kate Ashfield who played a lead role in Shaun of the Dead. it played out well, mostly set in a Suburban House in America with a few outdoor scenes it really was a good thriller. It was no slasher film nor was there any brutal scenes barring a little towards the end but it did <more>
not need it. The fact that things like this do happen in real life kept the buzz going and kinda made me think a little on the way we secure our car and home in the future. how some reviews are totally destroying this i cannot see, it was not a massive big budget film full of high end CGI but a nice evening film which was entertaining, it didn't need lots of action, overall a great film.
I am super surprised to see all the terrible reviews for this one because I really enjoyed watching it. Sure, it's not the most creepy "found footage" movie out there but the acting was great and the plot line disturbing. I would definitely recommend this one to fellow viewers.
