Dave, an artist who has yet to complete anything significant in his career, builds a fort in his living room out of pure frustration, only to wind up trapped by the fantastical pitfalls, booby traps, and critters of his own creation. If reviews could be so short, this is what I would say: "Everyone can stop making movies, and they can cancel the Academy Awards. 'Dave Made a Maze' is the film of the year, maybe even the decade. Mic drop." Seriously, rarely does a film capture the imagination quite like this. The artistic variety and beauty, the humor, the fun characters... and <more>
without any deep messages or R-rated nudity and cursing. This is a film that deserves a wide release and deserves to be lauded with awards. Perhaps this is not the sort of movie the Oscars typically singles out, but it should. To those involved in the making of this film -- strongly consider submitting it for consideration. If you do not get a production / visual effects nomination, the world is a lie. I also appreciated how the film had nods to other films, but did not make those homages blunt. A few "Star Wars" references come up, but are subtle enough that they may be missed. That is the proper way to honor a film rather than simply name-dropping it. So, again, well played."Dave Made a Maze" screened March 26 at the Boston Underground Film Festival BUFF . If there is any fairness in this world, it will son be screening at a theater near you and be given the wide release it deserves.
Wonderfully made, you will love this one (by satilla)
I believe this was one of the best movies I have seen this year. Compared to those huge budget movies this one brought something new on the table and it tastes great!!!!. Firstly I really loved the idea, it was really original and unique . How the crew shoot the movie , how they scripted the story was great. Although acting was not of a professional level, you will still like the characters. Visual effects also makes you feel the story. Great job guys. I would love to see your other works.
Wow what a joyride! Impressive movie (by ol-boehm)
This is one of the very few movies I saw the last 10 years I could enjoy from first to last minute and I had never the feeling that I know what I can see the next minute. This was a pure fantasy fun ride. This movie kept the fun and joy from first to last minuteHigh five is all I can say now
Extremely original, bizarrely inventive, beautiful to look at, and quite amusing! (by Hellmant)
'DAVE MADE A MAZE': Four and a Half Stars Out of Five An indie horror-comedy adventure about a struggling artist that somehow magically creates a giant maze in his living room, that's contained inside a small cardboard fort. When he gets lost in the dangerous labyrinth, his girlfriend leads a team of their friends into the maze to rescue him. The film was directed by debut feature filmmaker Bill Watterson, and it was written by Watterson and Steven Sears a debut feature screenwriter . The movie stars Nick Thune, Meera Rohit Kumbhani, Adam Busch, James Urbaniak, Frank Caeti, <more>
Scott Narver, Stephanie Allynee, John Hennigan and Kirsten Vangsness. I found the film to be extremely original, bizarrely inventive, beautiful to look at, and quite amusing.Dave Thune is a frustrated artist that feels like he hasn't created anything significant in his life, even though he's now over 30-years-old. While creating a cardboard fort in his living room, Dave somehow magically creates a gigantic maze inside it. The maze is full of deadly booby traps and vicious creatures, including a monstrous minotaur Hennigan . When Dave gets lost in the maze, his girlfriend, Annie Kumbhani , leads a team of their friends into the cardboard fort to find him against Dave's warnings .The movie is definitely unique and creative, but it's also surprisingly beautiful to watch at times. The filmmakers really made the most of their budget. It's kind of a horror movie, but it's never really gory or even truly violent. You'll have to see it to know what I mean for sure, but I've seen far worse on Adult Swim and even network TV . The actors are all funny in it, and well cast, and the story is kind of sweet hearted even. I had a fun time watching it, from the opening credits scene which is also impressively creative on. I think most film fans, looking for something different, will have an equally good time watching it too.Watch an episode of our movie review show 'MOVIE TALK' at: https://vimeo.com/230044658
This screened at the International Horror and Sci Fi Film Festival portion of the Phoenix Film Festival in April. It was a completely sold out show, and as far as I know, everyone left raving about this film.I admit, reading the plot I was really reluctant to see this movie. I tend not to enjoy horror comedies and I had no idea how a living room cardboard fort was going to capture my attention. Within the first 5 minutes, I was proved completely wrong. This movie was not only hilarious, it was also one of the more creative movies I've ever seen. Don't watch the trailer, just go in and <more>
experience this movie and enjoy the ride. You will not regret it.
Fantastic. Fun, original and well crafted. (by huwidibom)
Watching Dave Made a Maze was a blast : The film has a simple yet clever premise, which allows the set design the maze itself to take the main role and to amuse the audience. I loved the cardboard art the style kinda reminded me of the awesome 'otherside' clip by RHCP and found myself sucked into each new chamber explored. The film as a hole does not take it self seriously at all and that is a huge plus. It really makes the corkiness and the nonsense shine. Also, I felt that the short length of the film fit perfectly to the given premise. Finally, the dialogue had some funny punches, <more>
but for the most part just drove us onward into the well crafted maze and did a pretty solid job at it , yet I would like to point out that there is one monologue in the middle that I would not easily forget. Adding a lot of depth to the craziness.I hope to see more from the film makers. Highly recommended!
I don't know what Dave made exactly, but I enjoyed it! (by beastwarsfan)
I won't lie to you saying that I completely get this film and what's going on it it I'm not even sure we're supposed to get it completely , but I will tell you this - I certainly enjoyed it.The title is pretty self-explanatory. Dave's girlfriend comes back home to find out he's lost in a cardboard maze he built in the middle of their living room. Apparently the whole thing's way bigger on the inside. Dave's been inside for three days and can't get out. Friends come by to help, no one seems to believe Dave literally CAN'T get out of there, since the <more>
maze looks like a couple of boxes and paper leftovers taped together... and they get inside where weird stuff starts to happen.Call it whatever you want and it's probably all that! This film is entertaining, abstract, surreal, surprising, bizarre, quirky, enigmatic, random, creative, experimental, funny, offbeat, thought-provoking, sarcastic, visually pleasing, playful, whimsical, hand-made...I mean, it's a highly unusual mix, that makes watching it a really interesting experience. It feels like a commentary of 30s crisis, wasted youth and missed opportunities, artistic aspirations and all that, but it's also more. Every character is their own caricature. The film crew is especially spot-on, if you've ever had anything to do with the film industry you'd laugh out loud on some of their scenes. If you want to escape from the cliché enter Dave's labyrinth! You can analyze it, or you can look at the diverse sets and curious production design, you can look for the parody moments and film references scattered around the scenes... You can also watch it with friends over a drink and laugh and point out all the WTF moments in there. The film lasts a little more than an hour without the credits, so it will be over before it can bore you. Maybe :"Dave Made a Maze" won't stun you and puzzle you and get inside your head like Jim Henson's "Cube" 1969 or something by Terry Gilliam, but it's definitely worth checking out and has the potential of a cult following!
Absurdist movies like this make me happy to be a fan of cinema (by manuelasaez)
The premise of this movie is ridiculous. A man named Dave builds a cardboard maze and once he goes inside, he is lost in the labyrinth. His friends go inside to help rescue him. Chaos ensues. This is the type of absurdist premise that would yield a horribly made film in less competent hands, but in the hands of these people, it ended up being one of my favorite films of the year. It is just so much fun to see the maze and it's inner workings. It was like watching the inner workings of a clock. The acting is top tier and the comedy is spot on and rarely out of place. Actually, everything <more>
about this movie is so well done, that I am hard pressed to find a single fault in the movie. It is the type of film that will eventually have a cult following, and that people will come back to when they are tired of the superhero crap Hollywood keeps pumping out.Okay, now that I have been writing this review, I do have ONE niggling critique; the way people die in the film is really "cutesy". Instead of real blood, you see tissue paper flying all over the place. It reduced the deaths to Saturday morning fodder, and I would have liked this element of the film to be a bit more "traditional". Wouldn't it have been wonderful if, when someone died, the real blood would spray everywhere, and the maze would absorb the blood through the cardboard? The movie is constantly billed as a horror film, when it is anything but. It is an absurdist comedy with a heavy fantasy focus. This element alone bothered me enough to have me remove 1 star from my review.
Honestly a very quirky and unique movie. The comedy is spot on with out being too blatant. It seems like the director is a serious nerd with all the creativity and wittyness of a worldly individual. It was great. The effects were g Awesome. It was funny to see Leonard going thru the maze looking for everyone, getting caught up in all the rooms lol. This movie was done well, but it had to be done well in order to get the credit it deserves. The budget seems to be pretty high but if u think about it, its all made of cardboard which is scrap material.. So maybe the budget was way low. Idk, either <more>
way they made it work extremely well and there seemed to be a lot of different sets which was impressive. I will say I thought it was going to have more of a horror feel to it or at least some more horror elements. The roots of this movie are horror but it sprouted into some comedy adventure hybrid. 8/10. Only 8 because of the lack of any real scary elements. However, highly recommended
