On the one hand, in WKRR, you have one of the most tightly controlled Hollywood productions of all time, with none other than Robert Zemeckis, an A-lister, at the helm. The buzzword here, folks, is control. We may never know all the details of what happened during the shooting of WKRR -- one of my favourites, by the way -- but from history, we can safely draw two reliable conclusions. First, an excellent film resulted. Second, regardless of the first conclusion, no one in Hollywood was particularly interested in doing a sequel, and this is a town where, if someone's wedding footage looks especially promising, at least two agents will immediately start discussing "sequel." Which brings back to COOL WORLD. While I could list dozens of obvious "differences" between the two productions, I will list only one, and then rest my case. Bakshi. I say again, in case anyone missed it. Bakshi. The core difference between Zemeckis at the helm, and Bakshi, is that you hire the former, you unleash the latter. Honestly, you have to wonder if any of the suits had ever seen FRITZ before they greenlighted this deal? I totally love COOL WORLD, but I love it for the completely opposite reasons I love WKRR. ROGER RABBIT is a refined and polished production. COOL WORLD is insane. It should be shown in theatres with rubber walls. The core story is insane no spoilers -- but Bassinger does something no actress has done before or since, she sells "sexy" both in her live and animated versions and the animation is so intense that it should come with a warning about operating heavy machinery after you see it. Look, folks, Bakshi is the real deal, a creative genius who never seeks results, only possibilities. If you are fortunate enough to see this film more than once, and really watch the animation taking place in the corners of the frame -- not in the foreground! -- you will see things taking place you may wish you had never seen. And this tradition is not new, by the way. Around the WW2 period, the animators at Warner, to relieve tension, starting sticking odd cells in mainstream toons, and many were never discovered until much later. In the 60s a smart entrepreneur did a tour with reels of the "banned" Bugs Bunny cartoons! I said that critics either loved or hated COOL WORLD. I loved it. I think it will stand the test of time.

Yet, in the far end of our mind we know that it is not real: indulging in a fantasy may help someone to bear the reality, but doesn't give him the satisfaction he would feel if he lived his fantasy in the flesh. Frank finds consolation in his love affair with Lunette but he can't consummate this relationship. He can't have sex with her, he's human while she's a creature of imagination, a cartoon .Sex is forbidden between humans and cartoons. In general, interaction is forbidden between the two worlds, the real and the virtual, something like that could destroy both of them. This is a slick way to be pointed out that imagination is dangerous for the establishment of our real world, so don't use it at all and stop visualizing a different maybe better future for mankind, if you want to be a good citizen of this world. This is also a smart way to be noted that the real world's malice and ugliness may destroy the ideal virtual world our imagination has constructed so carefully. The return to the real world is a painful procedure and when you're back there you are reminded as Frank is that there are 8.000.000 ways for you to die, literally and metaphorically spiritually .Some technical flaws in the animation didn't prevent me from enjoying the surrealistic vibrating universe of Cool World, where always something happens. I found the film entertaining from the beginning up to its redemptive end, a kind of entertainment I had as a child, when cartoons were my favorites. I enjoyed the fine performances, as well, especially that of a young Brad Pitt in his pre-stardom era. Even in this early work one can perceive his inherent gift that he has developed gradually, so that to become the great actor he is today. He is terrific in the opening scene of the accident and absolutely convincing as a man who has been stoically compromised with his destiny: his greatest dream a consummated relationship with Lunette can never come true, neither in the real nor in the imaginary world. Concluding I would say that Cool World is a beautiful entertaining movie that it's worthwhile discovering it.

lines of text? Oh well, as a teen I had a crush on the brunette cartoon who plays Brad Pitt's girlfriend but I'd need to see the film again to see if I still fancy her at 31. I only seem to pull fat birds these days so it doesn't do well to set my sights too high and to fantasise about slender women, even if they're cartoons :P Has this comprised enough text to get past the ten lines nonsense? :P

notable filmmaker. this film has a lot to offer.for one thing, it's not Disney. that's for sure. some of this film is pretty racy sexually. the skilled design of the cartoon characters resembles the artwork of Fleischer and Tex Avery toons and the look of old Warner Bros., Terry and Harvey toons as well. Bashki brings this off brilliantly for anyone that's seen those toons from the 1930's and 40's.the film is helped by some hilarious, tongue and cheek performances from Kim Bassinger and Brad Pitt.i understand the criticism of the film somewhat. not only is it not masterwork of cinema 'Roger Rabbit' is, it's also a little uneven. the connection that this is the comic book world of a Stan Lee type artist is not always clear. the use of cardboard sets is often effective but not in all scenes. all in all, this is a very ambitious under-taking and this animation/live action process is hardly ever attempted.for this particular project, animation with adult overtones, Bashki is the master and was one of the first, therefore perfect for this. he also does a smash up job of bringing this hilariously to life. Bashki's kind of tasteless humour anticipated 'South Park' by decades. and he's still one of the best.this film is for any adult that is still in love with hand drawn animation and has a sense of humour about the comic books of their childhood in the seventies. and it's for anyone that likes "dirty duck" type humour. this movie is a animated mushroom cloud. hilarious.
