I live in Ukraine, I was in Chernobyl,Prypyat. I know what it is! (by roasthead)
I disagree with all previous reviews. I want to say that film was rather better in his genre horror - film wasn't filled with cheap scary tricks, as for me, it is important. Also, this point of view on that tragedy, which was in 1986, much better than others - we had better to laugh then cry! You don't see every year this tears and memory-concerts. They destroy bravest of people, who saved us many years ago they aren't alive now don't grateful to us. Because we create a great problem on that base. Do you, foreigners, know with what words we start 26 of April every year? No, <more>
you don't! In translation they will look like this:"Black pain, a day of black pain and death" Chernobyl Eng. - Чернобиль ukr.; Chern-Черний - black; Byl- біль - pain .I'm very grateful to the author of the film, he must continue it and film the second part an third. Also I recommend him to make an accent on computer game "S.T.A.L.K.E.R." in filming.I want to add that when I was in area which is near Nuclaer station an both cities Chernobyl, Prypyat it is really scary, even if you know that radiation only kill and don't effect mutation. The author really good pass it to spectator For example me . I have refelt the feelings that i'm in red forest again!I strongly recommend this film to everybody!!!
I don't sit down to watch a film just to find things to later complain about. I'm not Dr. Phil so won't comment on the characters relationships with their families and I'm not a linguistic expert so can't comment on the languages spoke but I am a horror fan so I can tell you that I found it jumpy : There ye go!Chernobyl diaries is just a good film to be enjoyed for what it is. It doesn't rely on major blockbuster effects, which tbh I'm sick of. Too many films now are all sfx and not decent scare factor. For a change, the audience are given the courtesy of a raw <more>
film. If you want explosions and shiny gadgets to tell you that a film is amazing then this is not for you. If you want to feel like you are actually there in the town with them I liked the camera work then you'll like it. Just chill out and enjoy the movie for what it is. Entertainment.
Good Horror Movie to Start the Summer (by laura-9653)
I recommend this movie to those who appreciate the suspense of horror movies and who enjoy watching horror movies because they are thrilling and get you thinking. The fact that it plays off of a true nuclear disaster gives it that thrilling effect that I love. Just thinking that there is in fact an abandoned city and there were mutations just adds to the suspense. I understand the dislike of the movie by the majority of the audience because of the shaky camera and because you may feel that you don't know what's going on so you just wait for that BOO! factor which does happen . I <more>
understand, but I feel that those things are what make this movie great. The director wants to give you that 'you're there' and 'this actually happened' feeling, that's why we have the 'shaky' camera. What do you expect when you have Oren Peli as the producer. And just like Paranormal Activity you have that mystery of what it is, what it looks like, and the suspense of when something is going to pop out. There is NO SEX!! Which is awesome, because a lot of the "horror" movies coming out in this time and age have unnecessary sex or nudity, which I think the movies could do fine without. This movie is indeed a good horror movie. I highly recommend that you watch it, just so you can decide yourself if it's good or bad, everybody is biased, I know I am, and I am not a professional critic so I may not know what I'm saying and you most definitely don't have to listen to me.I like good horror movies and had almost given up on American horror movies but Oren Peli strikes again.
Intense. A film where you genuinely fear for the characters (by baumer)
There are films where you fear for the characters in it. Blair With Project, Halloween, Jaws to name just a few. But rarely have i seen a film where you actually feel badly for the characters you are watching. This film does that to you. It gives you a genuine sorrow for them as no matter what scenario you come up with, you just can't see it ending well for any of them.I remember when I watched Friday the 13th the remake one of the actors stood out to me and that was Jonathan Sadowski, who played Wade, the guy who finds the pot plants while his friends are off having sex. He had a small <more>
part of course, but I remembered him more than the rest. His mannerisms, his comic timing and his manic and hurried speech. It all stood out. When I first saw Paul in this film, I didn't make the connection right away. He looked thinner in here and he was without glasses. But as time went on, he became more and more recognizable and that to me is the sign of a good actor. You remember them even if you don't quite place them perfectly. Here, he is, imo, brilliant. He's the risk taker but the he's also the protective figure as his younger brother comes to see him in Kiev. He exuded a certain confidence to him and I'm glad to see Sadowski getting more work. I think you'll be seeing more of him in the future.Chernobyl Diaries, according to IMDb was filmed in Serbia and Hungary. It's hard to find credible information to indicate whether or not this was actually filmed at Chernobyl. But if it wasn't they did a pretty damned good job of making it look like they did. According to Oren Peli, they filmed in some old Nazi Bunkers in Belgrade, Serbia. But there are exterior shots that look like the site of the infamous reactor. Either way, the location is one of bright spots of the movie. It provides all kinds of creepy atmosphere and tension. The dark, narrow tunnels, the dust and the old abandoned equipment, the aged and bucolic landscapes, it all gets inside your head. While some have complained about generic scares and the fact that you ostensibly know when the shocking parts are coming, that really didn't bother me. A horror movie is effective when you feel for your characters. This wasn't terrifying like The Ring and it wasn't as intense as John Carpenter's Halloween, but it is a film that makes you uneasy and as I said earlier, you fear for the characters. By the end when you know inevitably that it can not turn out good for anyone, I wanted all of them to die quickly, because the alternative was no so pleasant.Sometimes, as they say, death is not the worst thing that can happen to you.9/10
Reading the negative comments I wasn't expecting much (by feathers7676)
Although I wasn't expecting much from this movie given the average to scathing reviews from people - I wanted to watch it because of the atmospheric setting of Pripyat. The first thing that struck me was the characters were engaging & likable, the acting good. Once the scary stuff begins the tension is pretty-much maintained throughout the movie. Judging from the negative reviews here I begin to suspect we live in a world of complainers who have narrow expectations of how a movie should be and complain bitterly if it doesn't give them exactly what they want. Then again I've <more>
seen a few truly awful movies, badly scripted/acted that people here raved about Insidious 2010 . Sometimes mass opinion can be wrong. Chernobyl Diaries is one of the better horror/scare movies of this year. It doesn't rely on expensive special effects but rather on atmospheric location, good acting and good pacing that prevents boredom setting in. One of the best horror movies for me in 2012.
A truly terrifying, tense movie with plenty of scares. (by lucyrichards27)
I watched this movie last night and I thought it was terrifying - what with the creepy shadows and people, random animal attacks, dusty and dull mise en scene and jumpy sequences. The story itself is totally believable; a unknowing tour guide leads a bunch of tourists in a foreign country and he ends up prey for vicious animals. Many people are saying 'well, why were there people still there if it's an abandoned area?'.. if you wait until the end of the movie, it should all become clear. The whole feel of the movie is really creepy; it's dark, dull, dusty and abandoned. <more>
Let's just say the setting is the most effective component in the movie. The acting however, I would give a D grade for - it just wasn't that good. Apart from that, I don't have any more negatives to say about it. This movie can be compared to 'The blair witch project', 'The descent' and 'The hills have eyes', so if you like any of those movies, I suggest you watch this one. The whole realistic nature of the movie really drew me in too, seeing as the Chernobyl disaster actually happened. So did the events portrayed in 'Silent Hill' - it's a real place. Then there's the ending, to me it was unexpected, but I won't go into too much detail. Just watch it!
I think that's a key question you have to ask yourself. If you need to see visceral, bloody horror and horrific make-up and cgi directly in your face in order to be scared, then CHERNOBYL DIARIES is not for you. This is a horror movie that is more for the "What you don't see is even scarier then what you do see" crowd. I felt like this was a very well-shot, tense thriller. The atmosphere of the film quite effectively isolated and creepy. The ending is a bit on the weak side, but it doesn't trump the journey to get there. This is a great little flick to watch in a darkened <more>
Saying a movie is predictable is like saying a movie has a beginning, middle and end. Most movies, no matter the genre are predictable these days. Very few are super unique. I DO NOT think Chernobyl Diaries is predictable. With that being said; I enjoyed the movie a lot, I jumped, I wasn't bored at all! At one point I actually had to sit at the edge of the couch. Sometimes it felt like I was there with them. I feel that the director definitely executed the idea that the writers seen in their mind. I'm disappointed that the average rating is 5.0 because MANY people come to IMDb to <more>
check a rating before they watch a movie and the 5.0 will most likely deter them and they will miss out. I strongly recommend it to people that want to sit back and have a good scare.
Chernobyl diaries is a really underrated film. Seeing the reviews I wasn't expecting much, but I was pleasantly surprised. It seems to me, that many of the "critics" want to compare this flick desperately to recent entries in the genre. It doesn't quite fit so they have a hard time understanding it's true nature. This film has pretty much everything what a good horror film needs. The setting is great, it creates an eerie atmosphere and it's used very well. But we know that good setting doesn't make a good movie in itself. The characters are likable and their <more>
