Plot: After enslavement and near extermination by an alien race in the year 3000, humanity begins to fight back. Runtime: 118 mins Release Date: 12 May 2000
Battlefield Earth is without a doubt one of the most distasteful examples of cinema I have ever come across. That being said, I bought the DVD and have watched it about 8 times already. If you are like me, and you like sitting through a "serious" movie and laughing at how funny and bad it is, you should definitely check out this movie. Every time I watch it I find more and more hilarious plot inconsistencies, and the slanted camera angles and dialogue never cease to amuse. I guess since this film is somewhat affiliated with Hubbards hokey religion, there is no cursing to be found in <more>
the movie. Instead we get to hear how many ways you can use the word "crap." In several situations Travolta refers to specific unpleasants events as being "crap-lousy." It's hilarious and has to be seen to be appreciated. In conclusion, if you fancy yourself a MST3K type critic, you will surely enjoy this crap-lousy movie.
"Can I blow the Dome?"... The dumbest - but also funniest - crap in decades. (by fedor8)
Travolta's inane mugging i.e. his trademark over-acting is the movie's main attraction, though there are a multitude of other points of interest and hilarity. He was one of the producers so there was no one to slow him down i.e. he was out-of-control and surrounded with yes-men. At times he must have been thinking he was in a Shakespeare play, the way he pronounces certain words and sentences! Watching him play this alien with such reckless abandon, such merciless gusto, such witless panache, it becomes quickly clear that he was/is an idiot gone berserk with power and delusions of <more>
talent; he apparently has no idea how out of place such mugging is in a story like this. He must have forgotten Rule 127.5D from the "Book Of Acting", which states: "Never mug while in a sci-fi film, especially while you wear tons of make-up and a Rastafarian hair-do." This movie will also go down in history as an embarrassing failure by the Scientologists to bring the work of the Exalted One, Master of the Universe, Darth Hubbard, to the lowly masses of man-animals.The story is like the brain of a Hollywood Scientologist: full of holes. Terl regards the humans as beings incapable of doing almost anything, and yet he is supposed to know a lot about them and how could he not, given his race has been on Earth for a millennium? . Question: if he knows so much about them then how is it that he displays so bafflingly little of that knowledge when he discusses human behaviour with Whitaker? It's absolutely idiotic that Travolta's race has ruled Earth for a 1000 years, yet they seem confused why a dog is more co-operative than a human - yet "isn't useful for manual labour". They don't even know what humans like to eat! There is an utterly pointless, ludicrous segment where Travolta decides to let a group of humans escape so that he can see what their favourite food is, and later use that knowledge as "leverage" over them! An alien master race, which has spread all over the galaxy, surely must be intelligent and advanced enough to at least have basic knowledge of their conquered slave races and not underrate anyone; in this movie the superior aliens underestimate humans to the point of mind-boggling silliness - to the point where their home planet gets blown to bits. I don't think even fire-crackers catch fire this quickly. Terl's planet has evidently been covered with gasoline... Science fiction has never seen such ease in blowing up an entire planet. You see, their atmosphere is highly unstable Senator Palpatine could have saved so much money if he had simply nuked the planets he wanted blown up. The aliens are comic-book arrogant, i.e. not in a quiet, superior way but in a childish, boastful way! Listening to these aliens talk, one would get the impression that they must still be in their equivalent of the Middle Ages, and not a technologically advanced master race, rulers of the galaxy. Hubbard, the moron, hasn't thought this through at all. Also, isn't it a "bit" too much that a small group of humans - only one of whom has any kind of scientific knowledge - not only beat the aliens but actually even destroy their planet?! For 1000 years Earthlings have been obedient slaves to their alien masters, and suddenly there is an organized revolt, and in no time are the aliens beaten and Planet Psychlo blown to bits! "Hey, why didn't we do this earlier?!" – a question no-one asks but should. And how about cave people getting trained within days to fly fighter jets! "Piece o' cake!... Piece o' cake!..."; the fact that one of the humans keeps saying it's a piece of cake doesn't make it so, but I guess the cheesy Oprahesque point of the movie is that "you can do anything when driven by determination". Hubbard doesn't even possess basic knowledge of physics - a major embarrassment for any sci-fi writer - which he displays when the character "Zete" says that he hates "puny, undersized planets" because their gravities are "so different"; this implies that planet Psychlo is large - which means its inhabitants should be shorter than humans due to a larger gravity - not three heads taller. And what's this about him hating it because it's "so different": wouldn't a hot-shot from outer space know the difference between higher and lower gravities?? Of course he would; he should have said: "I hate these puny planets because their gravities are so much lower" or higher - in Hubbard's universe . But I forget: Psychlos are MORON conquerors. The movie would have been somewhat less silly and yet still unbelievably silly had all the Psychlos been speaking their language at all times, with English sub-titles below. Instead, Travolta's squeaky voice is in stark contrast to his make-up, costume, and "grand" physical appearance. Whitaker, on the other hand, has a deep, booming voice which helped him get away from this movie without appearing/sounding too laughable. Plus, he is a considerably better actor than Travolta; that's the other reason. When we laugh at Whitaker it's because his dialog is dumb, but when we laugh at Travolta we laugh at everything about him."Psychlo"... What a dumb word. Based on Hubbard's hatred towards psychiatrists. Naturally, every loon hates shrinks. We also have "gastrones" or gas drones? . Gastrones are the military forces that conquer. So when they talked about sending gastrones, it always sounded to me like Psychlos were sending their food experts to prepare some delicacies for the invaded races. Or how about "planet-ship"??!!... Why not "sun-laser"? Or "nebula-destructor"? Or "lightyear-orbiter"? To read a loving tribute of BE, google "vjetropev battlefield earth".
Wow, this has got to be the best movie I've ever seen! Now wait, hear me out... I agree that this is the campiest movie ever made, including Plan 9 and all the other ones that come to mind. It totally missed its mark on every point. You really have to see Travolta's acting in this movie to believe it. My favorite line of his: "When you were still learning how to spell your name, I was being trained to conquer GALAXIES!!!" See, the reason this is favorite movie is because it doesn't stop entertaining for ten seconds. Right from the beginning, something cheezy is happening <more>
that makes you feel embarrassed for everyone involved in this movie. If you haven't seen this movie, SEE IT!! I know it is hard to believe that the makers of this movie thought it would be good, but it's true! I read one of those promo magazines that came out right when the movie was released, and these people thought it would be a blockbuster! WTF???? Did the producers get to see this movie before it was put out?? Anyways, this is one of the few movies I'd give a 10/10 for because it is so humorous even though that's not what it was meant to be at all. A must see. One other thing: all you people that were upset at how bad this movie is, where is your sense of humor?? Are you the same people that like Ace Ventura or something? Does something have to be in the form of a one-liner joke for you to laugh at it or what??? Get a clue!!!
A fan of the book and not disappointed by the terrific movie. (by spoony-3)
Sometimes movies in a certain genre achieve a higher, more pure level of storytelling than even a sequel of a successful film; as in the case of the "Godfather" saga, which I have always thought was best culminated by "GoodFellas", not "Godfather 3". In such a way, Battlefield Earth is the satisfying next chapter in filmed science fiction that "Star Wars: The Phantom Menace" was supposed to be. It has all the raw energy and crisp, brilliant storytelling of the original Star Wars, along with it's own blend of intense, relentless action and ironical <more>
humor that made that film a landmark offering. The classic sf book, Battlefield Earth must have been a major headache to adapt; action scenes spanning the universe, intrigue, political drama, speculative science, and a long cast of unforgettable characters. That the team that brings us this new film managed to capture the spirit of the book as successfully as they have is a testament to what could only be an intense personal dedication to "getting it right", and audiences will reap the benefits. The actors do a magnificent job. Barry Pepper looks like he worked his ass off doing this part. His intense, chiselled looks and expressive determined face really sell the heroics, and you believe his dedication completely. John Travolta takes a chance on his career that no other leading man would- an evil alien. And he finds a way to have the most fun doing it. I laughed and laughed at his evil glee. Forrest Whittaker, as well, takes a huge gamble and pulls off one magnificent performance. Kim Coates is delightful. His contribution is really key, and in the final battle, really drew me into an understanding of why one makes the ultimate personal sacrifice. The special effects are the best I've seen since "The Matrix". In particular, the space vehicles are full bodied, "real" and compelling, not "lean" like most CG spaceships we are now bombarded by in any sf offering on TV or film. You could feel the mass of them. Awesome effects in the finale. Some have found cause to criticise Battlefield Earth because of the religious beliefs of the producer/star Travolta. I find this sad, particularly since the message of BE, as in many other important movies, is the sanctity of all life, respect and tolerance of one another. For some reason, though one never reads not since nazi germany of "Jewish messages" being a reason to avoid a work of entertainment, such courtesy is not extended to Travolta, whose Scientology status is well known and publicized. I find it in very bad taste to let one's intolerance of another's religion get so out of hand as to bad mouth Travolta's talents, which are formidable, because of it. Must we behave with such rudeness? Battlefield Earth is fun, fast, loud and funny, and is a great tale of the struggle for freedom, a theme that continues to resonate and have deep meaning to all. I highly recommend it.
This movie is far more funny and well humored than anyone can imagine. Its absolutely unfair to put it down. Its a home movie, very well done, well plotted better than watch old stuff like JohnWayne projecting his fat shadow on the wall in a paper scenery, flat studio floors, blue eyed apaches and all that kind of horror. In this movie the villain and his assistant are absolutely hilarious they are brilliant! is a heart made movie not intending to win any prizes but just making something light and funny. For sci-fi fans only, good humored people looking for relaxing non-sense. Compare it to <more>
the planet of the apes and see how less absurd it is, even the effects, actor performances are far better, as matter of fact, the movie has a very harmonious color schemes, make up is creative, light is perfect, casting, edition, i cant see why it is so bad reviewed, i prefer to watch this than boring Titanic, tedious Casablanca or the soporific Metropolis. This is a good movie, full of nonsenses as almost all the greatest science fiction movies. Or have you seen lately anybody with a fly head around? It shoud be a second Episode!
JUST LIKE THE NOVEL ITS ONE OF THE BEST SCIFI MOVIES EVER MADE! (by killer13)
Battle Field Earth***1/2[3 1/2 Stars]-The novel for this movie was raved as one of the best scifi novels ever written and thats what i would have to say the same thing about the film.It is the #1 scifi movie of 2000, better than the other two scifi movies this year, ''Pitch Black***[3 Stars]'' and ''Super Nova**1/2[2 1/2 Stars]''. It is also one of the best scifi film ever made. The story is excellent, the aliens are great, the ending is definately the best ending ever made in a scifi movie and is one hell of an explosion, and there is a lot of awsome scifi <more>
action exspecially in the last solid action packed 30 minutes of the movie.John Travolta gives another awsome and one of his best performances ever.At first i didnt like him that much as an actor but i have been very impressed with his performances in ''Face/Off***1/2[3 1/2 Stars]'',''The Generals Daughter***[3 Stars]'',and''Broken Arrow**1/2[2 1/2 Stars]'' and this movie. If you want to see some great scifi action and John Travolta in one of his best perfomances of his career then go and see ''Battle Field Earth''.
I expected a real donkey, either cheesy sci-fi pap with no plot or a boring self indulgent epic because of the terrible reviews but from the start of the film I found myself pleasently suprised, it turned out to be a thoughtful and interesting filmI have always been interested in cavemen and how they must have viewed the world. In BE the few surviving humans have regressed into a primitive society with no technology or education and the film spends some time with them, seeing how they live and see life. FascinatingI tend to dislike sci-fi films carried by special effects only and thankfully <more>
BE doesn't fall into this category. What makes it different is that instead of having an intracate plot embelished with strange future technology it basically revolves around the physcology of being imprisoned and enslaved which is unusualA lot of time is spent dealing with the humans responses to technology and advanced concepts, while we also see the aliens are not just 'evil' stereotypes - they just think the humans are animals and treat them as suchThere are also no massive battle scenes, and for a sci-fi film a lot of hand to hand combat. All this made me even more impressed and like most good films, the hero's really have to fight hard to win and they do in BE too, there is a sense of satisfaction when they start learning to outsmart their captorsI liked the sound track which was atmospheric and there seemed to be a lot of repetitive music played quietly in the background throughout most of the film - this is actually quite unnerving and I enjoyed this unusual effectThe only points of criticism I have are the concept of the aliens being after gold, the sillyness of flying 1000 year old Harrier jets, and the computerised 'education' scene where the hero ends up explaining geometry and physics to his cavemen brethren! The gold didn't bother me THAT much, after all its a resource of the earth and it's very believable aliens would invade our planet for its rich resources As for one or two 'silly' scenes well, they only last a few minutes its not a big dealSo I don't understand the critical attacks to BE. I can only assume people don't like Travolta for some reason ok, he's an easy target with the scientology , or were expecting lots of effects and action This is not Starship troopers which bored me senseless !Ultimately I think the film was marketed wrong, it should have been an underground film aimed at the alternative sci-fi market. Its just not a mainstream filmI think there a quiet a few people out there who would also be pleasently suprised like me!
Stop exaggerate !!! It's quite a pretty good movie (by aletannu)
In cases like this I really can't understand some people.1. The man that never seen some movies, but he absolutely has to vote for those movies. And, of course, his vote has to be like most of those who have already voted more than 50% of those did the same thing like he's about to do . Anyway, it's compliant for this reactions to be a specific feature for humans... we're descending from apes...2. The man that watches movie genre he doesn't like and naturally his vote will be a negative one he has to vote, he can't abstain... most people do, why shouldn't him... <more>
ape descending... . This probably reflects the "maso" dose at some people... watching movie genres they really hate. For those that really want to see a pretty good SF movie, I recommend this one. Good actors, good acting, good directing, good effects, good story, pretty good wardrobe, nice scenery. For the others... try to abstain. The comments over here are to inform people about the movies, your comments are exaggerated and because of this... useless. If you like SF movies, trust me, you won't regret the time spent in front of your TV while watching this movie. Go see it !
Battlefield Earth: A Saga of the Year 3000! (by Movie Nuttball)
The following is in My opinions.Truth is which many may not believe it but I like Battlefield: A Saga of the Year 3000 . I really don't know what is wrong with the movie? John Travolta was very, very good! He played his role excellently in My opinion! Barry Pepper, Forest Whitaker, and Kim Coates performed well. I was a bit disappointed that Richard Tyson didn't have a big role because he is an excellent actor! The music by Elia Cmiral is very good and sometimes quite haunting! The Psychlos looked neat and in My opinion they spoke like some of the characters in Star Trek! The movie <more>
has good action and good special effects! I think this movie is very misunderstood.
