Original, Strange and Entertaining (by HypnoticPoison7)
I feel like the rating for this movie should be much higher than it is, considering how original and interesting the plot was. Sure there were fantasy elements, and things that made you question reality, but it didn't take away from the film as a whole. I enjoyed this movie from beginning to end. Peyton Kennedy blew me away and made me want to see her in just about anything else. Children really are such natural actors. She is the main reason people should see this film and enjoy it more than they may have otherwise. I really liked the way the script played with good & evil, similarly <more>
to what Christopher Nolan likes to do. I would watch this again, and certainly watch more like this.
Excellent, strange Dark Fantasy with a great ending and wonderful actors--especially the little girl who is so demonstrative and natural you might think she is really a little farm girl the director found to play the part. There are so many unanswered questions here--gnomic things--and that is what makes the film so wonderful, uncanny, and, frankly, creepy.
Terrific Film Debut for First Time Writer/Director (by paul-2148)
I just stumbled upon this film, though it was released in 2016. I am baffled by the mediocre reviews. It was was one the most beautifully shot films I have seen in a long awhile. The director created a great sense of time and place. The characters were all wonderfully developed, especially Gitty, who, is a young preadolescent girl who dreams of seeing the world that lies beyond her family farm. For the rest of her family, the farm seems to be everything, so much so that it becomes one of the many mysteries that run through this beautiful, dark, and thrilling film. Peyton Kennedy's role as <more>
Gitty is flawless and transcendent. She has to play both innocence and wisdom simultaneously, and her performance is the heart of the film. First time writer-director, Anne Hamilton, instantly becomes someone to watch for me. I don't see any credits after this film in 2016, and that's a crime, but someone this talented won't stay quiet for long.
I truly loved this movie. It isn't refreshing in the sense that it is uplifting, but refreshing, in that it's a good film. Acting is amazing. Storyline is a mix of mystery and drama. Is it horror? I think so. No blood and guts but horror to me is being put into a situation which induces total and complete dread. This film did that for me. Set in a rural area so if that doesn't interest you, it might be boring. But the themes of family, loyalty, survival and morality are spotlighted here.
Pretty good! (by chrislesmckis)
This movie was pretty good! it was filmed really beautifully and the acting from the main character Giddy was executed really well. It was also told from her point of view which was really interesting. I don't know why most people from this movie hard to follow, i found it really straight forward. It's worth a watch.
Very impressive first film that we quite admired (by socrates99)
We're living in country very reminiscent of the film's location, so there was a heightened appeal to the scenery for us, but honestly, this movie rises far above the attractiveness of its setting. It's a little unusual in that a major part of the drama hangs on the relationship between the father and daughter who greatly resemble each other. I found then both easy to listen to and watch. Both actors do a great job in their roles and they carry most of the picture with substantial help from this first time director who tells her story very effectively.I've read criticism of the <more>
plot and the non-resolution of various issues brought up, but as one who needs murder mysteries and spy dramas to make perfect sense, a story mostly from a child's point of view set on a farm doesn't have to come together like a puzzle. I enjoyed this film and look forward to more from this interesting director.
Really loved this movie. Have to admit that much of what I liked about the film is visual; it's really visually stunning. I think the director? idk who does this part but... scenic vistas of farmland are meant to cause a yearning, a pull, an ache for things to be "right" and "good" and "just." Especially beautiful because these vistas are always shown in twilight of the morning or evening; something so quiet and reverent, something so pure and almost holy about it. Like innocence about to be shattered somehow. You find yourself cheering for <more>
"Gitty," the main character; a brave young girl whose conscience is more developed sadly perhaps than those of the adults in her life. Don't want to give anything away because it's too enjoyable to watch without knowing what happens, but just to say that the allegories of "fables" is sort of woven into the plot, and it reminded me a bit of "Spirited Away," where a young girl has to be brave and have courage and character to be victorious.
