Something different - a sci fi film with a brain (by Rinkerstinker)
Perhaps I'm biased because I work in the film industry, but it makes me mad when crappy reviews come out about films with concepts and ambitions that obviously outweigh their budgets. Everyone wants more money to make their films, but the question regarding talent is what do people with the resources afforded to them. This film gets under the skin, parallelling contemporary American foreign policy whilst giving a balls-out ride into a post-victorious alien invasion scenario. This is what I like about ALIEN OUTPOST. It's smart. It delivers a sic fi action film on a fraction of the budget <more>
of a Hollywood Studio flick, but because of its low budget it can afford to take time to build the characters and take risks that the Studios wouldn't allow.
Hollywood has given us a number of Alien movies in recent years that where just bad or at the most they where OK. To list some: Battle:LA, Skyline, Clover field, etc. These movies are high budget and with dreadful acting and extremely questionable cinematography.A documentary named "Restrepo" Directed by Tim Hetherington and Sebastion junger filmed in 2010 was one of the best war documentary's ever filmed in my opinion of course. The only other Decent documentary i can think of being "Inside Combat Rescue". If you take both of these then put a post alien invasion <more>
"Battle:LA" plot to it you get "Alien Outpost".First lets talk about the actor comparison of "Battle:LA and Alien Outpost". In "Battle:LA" we have a few very well known actors starring. All very well paid and all coming from a slew of Hollywood movies they had done in the past. Now lets take the guys from "Alien Outpost" Nobody except maybe you're smiling mothers and fathers and a token small fan base from there previous movies.... if there are any know who these people are. When the Hollywood actors speak its pure script and they put the emotion that's written on paper to there million dollar vocal cords and eventually a director takes a dump and you have your flashy hyped up and eagerly awaited movie at a theater near you. When the non-Hollywood actors go off and play out the script you get the script and what the actors think will immerse the viewer into the story. In other words actors are encouraged to add in a bit of there own dialog where the script has very little. Overall making it far more gritty. Now go and watch and listen to how soldiers act and talk in "Restrepo". Then go and watch and listen to how actors act and talk in "Battle:LA". Finally go and watch and listen to how actors act and talk in "Alien Outpost". Notice how in "Battle:LA" they manage to speak all four pages of dialog the director wrote. while in "Alien Outpost" they only speak about half a page to a page of dialog and the rest is just swearing running around shooting and telling people which side to cover."Battle:LA" on the other hand rarely taking a breather rarely not running and gunning rarely not in combat. Are you seeing my point here. Still not convince that "Alien Outpost" did combat the right way and "Battle:LA" completely wrong.... OK lets look at something else then. The amount of ammo the guys in "Battle:LA" are spewing out without having to get a resupply from either a helicopter or returning to the Forward operating base. Wow i think that Marine just pulled a fourth clip out of a 2 to 3 at the most clip pouch. Literally they don't stop to get ammo until the end of the movie."Alien Outpost"... "Man these guys sure do have to switch to there pistols a lot after fighting for 6 to 7 minutes." The reason for that ladies and gents you don't normally run around with enough ammo to last you a month in combat unless you've got an APC filled with pre- loaded extra mag's sitting around supporting you the whole time. Now correct me if i'm wrong but I didn't see a single god damned Bradly with them in that movie. So when the fighting to a little while the guys in Outpost had to switch to there pistols until combat ended and they could go back inside to refill there magazines.Any ways that's enough ranting for one day overall "Alien Outpost" 10/10 Semi Realistic, way better acting than one would expect, and far to underrated for what it truly deserves. And for those of you who say the camera style is bad the CGI is horrible why would any one watch a fake documentary about a war that didn't happen? Your probably the same tasteless dick wad's that enjoyed the movie "Battle:LA" and called it oh so realistic and totally awesome dude.
This is how a movie should be made. (by lord-blade)
It's sad to see what a low score this movie's gotten considering how truly amazing it is.It's rare to see a film that has an excellent story, amazing presentation and great acting. This isn't yet another mindless alien flick full of mindless violence, and it's definitely not one of those "found footage" schlocks. This is a masterfully presented view of what real war is like, even if it involves aliens. The movie shows the events involving the garrison of an outpost set up in a forgotten part of the world in order to help fight off the remnants of an alien invasion <more>
of earth. It presents a believable group of soldiers dealing with the horrors of being on the front line and the tough choices they have to face every day. Honestly, without the alien aspect this movie could easily pass for a real front line war recording. It's that well done. You're not watching endless "shaky cam" nonsense. The camera is solid yet fluid. Honestly, you will forget that you're actually supposed to be seeing everything through the eyes or cameras of two war videographers. If "found footage" films were done with this level of quality, they could truly become a genre worthy of respect. This movie scores top scores in all regards and puts most Hollywood big budget movies to shame. It's a must see for everyone.
i really enjoyed this movie and would actually love a sequel to keep the story going. too many sci fi movies of late have been predictable, but this was far from that, i want more please! plenty of action to get you going, you feel for the characters as if you were there battling to save humanity alongside this squad. there is some good humor to enjoy also throughout the movie which i did think suited this title to make it so much more realistic and believable. Set in the dmz of Afghanistan, you can relate to today and the Taliban or the tribal people defending there homes and this reason <more>
makes it so not so far fetched that even in 20 years they still would attack any foreign invaders they don't invite to there land , even if they are there to keep the world safe from invading spacemen . i totally loved this film and did not want it to end, i wanted more gunfights & lasers grenades & mortars!
Don't believe the ratings. Read the reviews! This movie was featured on Netflix's home page, and even though the still from the movie looked cheesy I decided to check the IMDb rating first. The rating was 4.6, but thankfully I've made it a practice nowadays to read the featured review - I was rewarded with an entertaining watch! This is a well made war movie! I was never bored during the movie, the storyline kept me intrigued, and I never felt like I was watching an enactment. The best part was that it did not have any known faces and that made it more of a <more>
"this-is-how-it-happened" kind of documentary-movie.I will definitely recommend this to any war movie buff. Or to any Counter Strike fan!And don't miss the extra footage at the end of the credits!
I think this is an underrated movie, it deserve at least 6,5 or more.It has a good storyline, good dialogs and strong characters and good effects. I think the whole team, crew and actors, did a fine job.I gave it 9, although i know it doesn't mean too much with all people that don't understand a good idea. For a better rating add a woman and a sex scene, i think thats why was underrated. There are so many movies that don't deserve the high rating and many that deserve it and i actually don't understand people for that.Lately i observed that people put the accent on effects more <more>
than for the movie's storyline but it should be at least equal.I hope for a sequel
Good movie, if you're not expecting a genre flick (by equazcion)
I kept having to double-check whether the IMDb rating I was seeing was for the right movie. This movie is good. It doesn't even look low-budget, if you ask me. The production values, the sets, the props and effects, and even the acting are all pretty well up there in quality and are actually above-par for an indie flick. In fact, the only clue I can see for this even being an independent film is the lack of celebrity actors. Plop a couple famous faces in here and I think anyone would be hard-pressed to tell the difference from a Hollywood production. The only explanation I can see for the <more>
poor ratings is that people were expecting a sci-fi flick and are judging the movie's compliance with that expectation. I've seen this phenomenon before, and it's sad, because good movies end up without the recognition they deserve. This is actually a good movie, in nearly every way. It's basically a war movie with a touch of sci-fi, and in that regard it's actually rather exceptional. It's well-written and well-acted, with convincing combat, and an interesting and original story. It's my hope that people disregard the low ratings and give movies like this a shot anyway.
SciFi Documentary style Reminds me of District 9 (by drbillh41)
While a little slow at times, this SciFi delivers a story that unfolds like a documentary, reminds me of district 9 without being a copy of it. Its refreshing to see a SciFi with a story, without a large amount of special effects, about an Earth we can relate to without too many futuristic changes. For a low budget film I think it turned out well.I make it a habit if the film looks interesting then I do not pay attention to reviews unless there are many with less than 3 stars. Most people are very critical in ratings and many 5 star films I have liked and few big budget I thought were waste <more>
of time and money. This was worth the time and money. I'm on the fence of 7 or 8 stars so I gave it an 8 because I really think I will see it again. I hope to see a sequel
I'm truly grateful my instincts served me. The trailers were not great and the IMDb ratings for this film were awful... but I watched it anyway. IT WAS GREAT. No criticisms at all. I guess if you think 'hollywood nonsense' all flash no story makes a great movie, then this isn't for you. If you liked movies like District 9, then this will be right up your alley. Great characters, great story, great cinematography, great effects and great action!I hardly EVER write reviews but just HAD to to try to make up for the poor reviews by idiots who have no idea...
