Once again, Robert Duvall delivers like few others can. The cast, story line and everything about the movie was grand. His co stars, while I was unfamiliar with them prior to this, were so outstanding. Movie drew me in right from the start and held me fully. Only disappointment I had with the movie was that it had to end. No matter what role Mr. Duvall plays, he is so very convincing and makes you feel like he is someone you know personally. The scenery was outstanding as well with such a great soundtrack. Its sad that ranchers and farmers alike face the devastation of losing the homes and <more>
land that they have worked so hard on due to the way things are these days. I will purchase it on DVD as soon as it is available and look forward to watching it time and time again. Instant classic.
I've known people like the good guys in this movie including the Duvall character This was about my friends out acting crazy...and they do. I understand that it was not believable to strangers; but if you let Duvall show you someone you never met, he does it well.Irvine is criticized for not holding his own with Duvall. Get real!! A New York raised college-boy and the Duvall character would take a long time getting acquainted. The day and night in the movie might be enough. What would not be believable would be if the grandson started out on an even footing.I usually judge a movie by <more>
what stayed with me to the next day. Sometimes the next morning I have to try to remember what the movie was. "A Night in Old Mexico" was not forgotten. Every character is sharp and clear and real. All of the locations are real to me. If you have met someone like Red, Duvall's character , and spent a night or two being wild and crazy in a Mexican border town; then it is easy to watch. The cast and crew all met someone like Red, Duvall , and they were all in a border town. Maybe the fault in the movie is that it doesn't bring outsiders in. If you haven't been there and met him you don't see the reality. Too bad for you.

I loved this movie. I get it. there are blockbusters, huge movies with great scripts...and there are small movies, with low budget and with lots of constraints. There is great connections between Angie, Duvall and the young kid. I agree with Patty Wafers when she said that in Mexico they are not afraid of living with old people. they love their seniors, unlike other cultures where seniors are nothing but dirt and they only belong in a retirement home. Duvall says " I am not done. I have places to go, things to do". why not? we are all going there sooner or later. this is a cute <more>
little movie. it has a lot of heart, great actors, excellente directing taking in consideration the challenges and the low budget. Excellent little movie. a little adventure is always good. dreaming about doing things you normally don't do can bring a sense of freshness and life into your heart. Duvall said he was afraid of dying with someone spoon feeding him...better die living, huh?
I liked the ending. The ONLY criticism I would make was not showing more 'cattle' and a Cow-dog - if not a horse or ATV.A friend of mine who's a small cattle rancher up here in Martinez CA, is 75 yrs, and is going through chemotherapy for prostate, altho' I think it's the type of tuberculosis you evidently can get from cattle which is treated by chemo! he had to hand over the cattle operation to his ranch hand a Mexican who's waiting for his wife from Mexico so he can stay in the cottage on the property - while he recoups hopefully at his brother's; I <more>
recommended it to him, I think he would feel encouraged. He's very hard working, fixes everything himself; He was a former fisherman in Alaska - and a carpenter after that. Besides being as gruff as the character Duvall played , he's the best person you ever met - kindly but strong - and smart as a whip still. Ididn't like the 'gun' scene - that's why I had to debate about recommending it to him, but I did recommend it to him. I'm the girl friend he ends up with! - so that was "true to life" - Writers, how did you know!?!
Duvall at his crotchety best. Heartwarming in a violent and gritty kind of way. (by rchewings)
If you like Robert Duvall's mature movie roles, you'll probably enjoy this kinda funny, kinda violent, definitely profane little comedy drama. The supporting actors were just OK in my opinion, but it may have just been the contrast with Duvall that made their parts pale. I did like the casting of the female lead because of her classical full body look instead of the skinny, hyper-pretty crap that's all too common these days. In a nutshell, the flick is heartwarming in a violent and gritty kind of way. I suppose it's a spoiler to say it ends happily, albeit in a totally <more>
unexpected way. On the other hand, I can't help thinking I would have enjoyed it more knowing the old fart comes thru smelling like a rose. Being an old fart myself, the ending was truly like a dream come true.
I doubt I've ever seen a Robert Duvall movie that was not worth watching and the same can be said of this one. Duvall plays a cranky old coot not ready to take up the rocking chair and I hope he isn't ready for a long time. A decent premise to the movie and several places that make you smile. If you like crotchety hard-headed old folks this is the movie for you. While in all respects a slow movie I didn't regret a minute. I wish IMDb didn't require ten lines for a review because I doubt I've had ten lines to say about any movie. But it's nice to be able to give one a <more>
good review, one that isn't cr*p found footage and one where the acting enabled the suspension of disbelief for a couple hours.
